John Mayer: The Prince of Blues--A Concert Review

Sep 14, 2006 01:55

September 13, 2006--Webster Hall--NYC

Because, dudes, after this show, he totally deserves this title. He plays great homage to the classics: BB King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton.... just to name a few... but he knows his own shit to be original too.

I love his facial expressions that, I'm sure, help to keep his rhythm and whatnot. It's still great... and IMHO, there's nothing hotter than a guy who knows how to play guitar, but it's even HOTTER if he plays as if he's making love-music. His slightly opened mouth is enough to drive any girl crazy on top of just downright sexy music. IMHO, HE'S bringing SexyBack. (Which, with his sort of warped sense of humor, I half expected him to poke fun with that song and the fact that their CDs were released on the same day. I digress though.)

It was nice to finally be a part of an audience who can get down with his blues and his pop-rock beginnings with "No Such Thing." And, for the most part, I'd have to say that John Mayer's fans are the best that I've ever stood in line with and just generally being around. There were a couple obnoxious guys who started out saying, "Where's Jessica?" But they were soon either told to stfu or just got some manners. BTW, everyone knows that she and her PR will tell anything, so long that it makes her look good.

Besides John Mayer's massive sex appeal (to me, anyway), he's got massive talent. I have so much respect for one of my peers (I feel I can say this since he's my age) for being able to play so well and to have such passion for it. It's like you can literally see his soul sing.

He played a lot of the material from Continuum, rightfully so, as well as highlighting his previous works, such as with "Daughters" and "Bigger Than Body" (which I'm *just* picking up on its spirituality aspects). He added a nice touch of Thom Yorke's chorus of "The Eraser" toward the end of "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room." I think he must be a Thom Yorke/Radiohead fan b/c Yorke's stuff was playing while people were setting up his stage. I think I must've been one of the few people who picked this up.

And, this is probably a huge factor why I love the musicians, and him in particular, that I do.

I took this pic with my cell phone. Not that you can see him really, but at least you can tell what kind of view I had.

*snuggles memory* I'm sooo glad that I got to go :)
