08.01.06--Dixie Chicks--Madison Square Garden, NY
What I love about the Dixie Chicks in general came through when I saw them live; of course, that's also what I kinda didn't like about it. Let me explain.
The energy in their music that you can hear on any given album was totally there. The passion and powerful voice that Natalie possesses comes through live.
Yet, even tho I went in unspoiled to their setlist, the performances were predictable. They didn't change it up at all. Natalie's voice stayed intently powerful. Emily's and Martie's banjo and fiddle (respectively) playing never strayed from what you can hear from the album. And, so as a result of these factors, the audience predictably cheered almost before Martie had a fiddle solo. It was cool the first few times, cuz I was like, yay active audience. Then, it became annoying and frustrating.
I got to hear my faves, which I'm sure they make sure they play anyway, anywhere: Goodbye Earl, Sin Wagon, Top of the World, and Wide Open Spaces. The energy was high and fun...
But it was during the newer songs that fans (or myself) weren't that familiar with, both the Chicks and the audience energy level was pretty low. In fact, I think Jay and I almost nodded off during one song, which WASN'T "Lullaby."
All in all, however, I have to say that I'm glad I got to see them after listening to their stuff for almost 10 years. And, even though I teased Jay for cheaping out on the seats we got, I really think that it was fine. I have to say that despite the predictability, I admire the Dixie Chicks for sounding excellent and maintaining professionalism.
