You know, these entries are going to go unnoticed since no one's around (hardly) on a holiday weekend. *le sigh*

I don't care. There are just a couple political issues I need to get out there.

The ONE Campaign

Are we all really being duped/lied to, or does it really matter?

ascii_70_85 brings up a good point in this entry in that the Live 8/ONE campaign ( Read more... )

life - politics, music - indies

I agree with much of what you say. I do think, however, the Supreme Court ruling was a crappy ruling in that in does nothing for the artist in actuality. It's way too gray and vague and useless. It doesn't actually stop P2P sharing. I posted an article about it in my LJ last week that hits on just a few of the problems with the ruling itself. Casey joined in the discussion, btw.

Not that I'm debating this issue, it just stuck out to me, but:

If a song doesn’t pull me in within the first minute or so, I can tell it’s not going to work.

That's a statement that is completely untrue for me, personally. Some of my favorite songs (albums) took me three or more listens to decide if I liked them, much less loved them. Which is why those sites where you can stream the music generally doesn't work for me, unless I've got time to sit there and listen to the same song ten times, or the sites that only provide clips of the music. I will generally only buy anymore if I can sample full songs (not full albums, but full songs)for long lengths of time before hand.

To use Casey as an example, I downloaded about four of his songs from someone on my LJ list who said, "Rhi! Listen to this guy! You'll love him! I promise!" And I listened to those songs about twenty times or more before I decided to purchase the album. And, given what I've said in the past about my issues with some of the production choices, while I don't regret buying the album (it's in my top 6 "current albums of the moment" rotation and I love it), I am certainly glad that I was sold on the guy before I sunk money into it.

So, um, that really is neither here nor there regarding the issue of downloading, or peer-to-peer, or what have you, it's just me blabbing about me and music and what it takes to sell me on a song, much less an album.

As for where I get my downloads that I do sample? Mainly from my LJ friends list. Most folks on my flist have pretty darn good taste! ;)

I guess for someone like me who doesn't have the luxury of ever really having sound on a computer or having the time to digest songs 20 times or more, I have to go by my gut reaction to what I initially hear, which is why (for me) I more heavily rely on recommendations of people who know what I like (which is why I checked out Casey live--because both you and violetsuede talked highly enough of him). Which brings up another method of how I find new artists to like, and that's through live performances. To me, that's the ultimate test. If they don't draw me in there or if they just suck live, then I don't think I'm going to like anything they record, or I just won't support a recorded album since those can be doctored so much.
