I am sitting on my porch next to a big ass bowl of candy (Three Musketeers, York Peppermint Patties, and Hershey's with Almonds and Toffee, if you must know). I have my little horns tucked on my head, a red turtleneck, and my red horny hoodie; Suzie is dressed in all black, a sparkly black scarf, and kittie cat ears and tail. Kids have come and gone, with more to come. There was a race car driver and a mummy, a lady vampire and a Power Ranger, a princess and a cheerleader. There were Those Kids who were at least thirteen or fourteen, without parents, who don't have a costume on, a plastic grocery bag, and who took handfuls of candy.
Wes and I went food shopping for the first time since I moved (HAI, THAT WOULD BE THREE MONTHS AGO), and now my fridge is stocked with frozen dinners, canned soup, applesauce, and Oreos. Wes grabbed ground beef and kidney beans, and is making a big-ass pot of chili that we can freeze for later. We grabbed burritos from Anna's (holy too much refried beans, Batman) and beer, and now I'm duly fed and mellow.
The night air is cool and brisk, the leaves are falling and dry. It smells like autumn, almost winter. The veil is thin, the crackling sensation is at my fingertips and hiding in the corners of my vision. I can feel tonight, and it feels like home.
I'm starting to think about life down the road, about where I want to be and when. Maybe graduate school, maybe a change in careers. Maybe, maybe, maybe. The wind is cold and fresh, and it's taking me with it. I can see witches on the horizon, parents with glow stick necklaces, and whispers of a night of magic.
Happy Halloween, y'all.
