A new kind of commute.

Happy moments on a much-shortened commute:

- the birds were chirping this morning, full-throated proclamations of 'Spring! Spring is here!' They were in the bushes, the trees, the air... Weather above freezing brings them out, and they brave the still-chilly New England weather to encourage the buds, the earth, all of it to warm.

- In the nastier weather, I walk in the road, because it is much, much safer than the sidewalks. I pass many cars and generally take a peek at bumper stickers as I go, just out of habit. As I was traipsing my way along Professor's Row, I passed a black civic with a traditional college sticker on the back window-- it read, in big, bold, beautiful blue letters: "MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE." There, in the midst of Jumbo territory, was a proud MoHo, and it warmed my heart at 8:45 in the morning.

I don't see my Rocking Commuter any more, but there are other things that make that time my own, and make this small city of Somerville an island of familiarity inside the larger bustling hub of Boston. Boston is my hometown, and Somerville is my backyard. The things I get to know, I'm breaking it all in, down to the comfort of an old pair of shoes, well-worn and well-loved. Cozy, comfortable, and most of all, my own.

wander: boston, thoughts, life: commute
