I'm slow to discover new music. Last year, I heard and fell in love with the music of Sufjan Stevens. The year before that, I found out about Jack Johnson's upbeat riffs. The year before that, I grew attached to the folk music of Kate Campbell. I guess I've been latching on to the music of one new musician a year ever since I stopped listening to radio.
This year, I've been impressed by Deer Tick. I heard about 3 lines of their song Art Isn't Real as background music on a podcast and got hooked. My two favorite songs on their album War Elephant are below.
I like honest music, particularly when it's this catchy and creative a blend of blues, folk, and grunge. To top it all off, the artist (John McCauley III) was only 19 when he recorded this album! Now that's talent.
