Crowned in glory

After ten years of marriage, you'd think we have the self-sacrifice thing down.  You don't get this far without a fair amount of putting mercy above justice, the other's needs (and desires) before your own.  Marriage is a martyrdom -- a testimony to the sacrifice, faithfulness, and communion of love between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  The past ten years have born witness to this, and this past Sunday so did the Church.

We were crowned husband and wife, king and queen of our household, martyrs to each other and our community.

It's not the most flattering of pictures.  Father Aidan's covering Steve's face; I'm clearly showing my sleep deprivation of the night before.

I stayed up way too late preparing for the party we hosted after the service.  1/3 anniversary party, 2/3 Isaac birthday party, we fed 57 people barbequed beef sandwiches, grilled hot dogs, corn, fruit, cupcakes, beer, wine, and juice in our backyard while the kids jumped on the trampoline, played in the sandbox, batted a pinata, and competed at rounds of musical chairs.  It was a smashing success, but I didn't get to bed Saturday night until well after 2 a.m., just after I put the finishing touches on the crowns.

Now, they're hanging in our family icon corner on some nails that were in that wall when we bought the house a year and a half ago.

Lovely, aren't they?

anniversary, orthodoxy, marriage
