Speaking as someone who hasn't read the books -- yet -- I enjoyed the first show enormously and have bought the whole series because I want the written as well as the televised version. This is one female who would've liked it without the sex, too.
I really think this show is going to make it. I posted on twitter that A Game of Thrones is currently in the top 100 on Amazon. That means a lot of new people just rushed out and bought it, and this doesn't represent everyone who's going to keep watching who's new to the world, just the people who saw enough after the first episode like yourself to purchase the first book (or more). Interest is high early on. I'll be curious to see the Nielsen rating for the first episode, and even more curious to see what it is for the second episode.
I bought the whole set. I couldn't resist. I've always been a fantasy fan, but I have to read so many books to review, this one slipped the net. Shows like HBO's GoT make it possible for people to see what they've been missing. I was caught up in the wave and I'll ride this one out to the end.
Two things I thought made this better than most HBO shows. Scenes that last longer than 13 seconds, and the attention to detail.
Things I missed from the books: the faces on the weirwood trees. And I just don't like Lena Headley as Cersei. At least match the eyebrows up with the wigs, people!
Heh. I've seen the eyebrow complaint pop in a few places. I can live with it. In my mind, I pictured Cersei as a little younger and more beautiful, because that's pretty much how Martin paints her, but I can live with Headley. On the faces in the trees, I think we could see those later on, as they're pretty important. But as they were operating under a budget, this might be a corner they cut early on, knowing they could always slip it in later ...hope so.

So, did you sit uncomfortably on the throne? :)
The bad news: the show doesn't make it down here for another three weeks. :(

Chris, I promise you these next three weeks will be worth the wait.

My only nitpick is I figured there were more trees around Winterfell.
