Clearly directed toward fans / Good movie

This film is clearly a love letter to fans of the original Broadway production. The film retains almost all the music. The added dialogue many people keep referencing is actually lyrics that had been transformed into live dialogue.

I disagree with recent criticism of the cinematography. I believe the simple fade-to-black technique used throughout the film is actually quite effective. There's a subtlety to it I like.

I'm a die-hard fan of RENT, so I realize I'm biased. I still had a great time seeing the film, while trying to do my best not to sing along out loud. The story does seem to lose a bit of its in-your-face appeal, but this is a by-product of two things: 1) I'm too familiar with the story and music and 2) In late 2005, hopefully some of us have become aware of the HIV-epidemic, its effects, and the general plight yet enduring spirit of those living with HIV and the gay community in general.

A little cheesy at times, but I've yet to see a musical that is not cheesy at times. It's the genre. And, I still love it :)

Great music. Go see it.
