3am is a song from English punk-pop group Busted's second album, A Present For Everyone. As far as I remember, it came out as a single around the time they split up. Sad days for people who like to jump up and down with guitars everywhere.
I sort of like the video. I mean, the song's nothing revolutionary, and the lyrics aren't so great. But I do like the video. It's one of those "clips from concerts" deals that bands do if they haven't got any time or money to make videos, but really it isn't too bad. You get the sense that these guys, who were really young at the time - like, my age - were absolutely perfect in that moment. They're never going to look, play, feel that good again. For a few moments in your life, whether it's playing Wembley, or sitting on your front lawn listening to a Walkman, you're completely invincible.
It doesn't last.
The good-looking guy in the band decides to throw it all away for street cred. The songwriter ends up fiddling in a studio, doing nothing. The other guy remains, well, the other guy. People die, people get lost, people get boring and responsible and settle down and have kids. Nothing wrong with that. Better than most options. But you lose it, that magic when you're 18, 19, and have the entire world at your feet.
I see this happen to so many people, and I wonder, "why couldn't you hold on? why couldn't you make the magic last?"
But maybe things just don't work that way, and they particularly don't at 3am.
