Tromso is an island and a city. The island is in a fjord, about six miles by two miles. The city is on the south side of the island, and overflows across a bridge to the mainland beyond. At the edge of the city, the mainland rises to a mountain, and you can get a cable car up it. Which is where I took these pictures:
You can see the old port, the bridge to the mainland (which we walked back over) and the bridge off the far side of the island (which actually leads to another, much larger island, called Troms). The airport is on the far side of the island, and you get from it to the city through a system of tunnels hacked out of the hill, complete with underground roundabouts. (If you've seen the Avengers movie, they look a lot like the tunnels in the first chase sequence.)
This is the south end of the island, with some of the beautiful landscape around it:
And this is a better view of the mainland part of the city:
We stood here and worked out the best way to walk back to the bridge. Which took us down this suburban road:
Huge thanks to
groliffe for lending us his camera, since we couldn't find ours. We thanked him with beer from "the northernmost brewery in the world". After which we spotted the northernmost Toys-R-Us shop in the world, the northernmost branch of KPMG in the world, and the northernmost Elton John concert in the world.
