Mister O Maille, Alder Graves, Mister Clement, and others,
I respect my Alders, and
> those higher in standing than me, and many of equal and lower, but what have
> they done to keep that status bestowed upon them? It's not so much a case
> of what have they done for me, but what have they done for the covenant at
> large?
The answer to this question is simplicity itself:
They persist and endure.
By simply existing as Invictus who have become seen as admired to the
Covenant, they are an example that our precepts are true and our faith
has not been misplaced. They demonstrate that earning one's stature,
according to the tenants of the Covenant, holding those tenants and
principles close, can allow one to endure and prosper.
Those who have become admired to the Covenant as a whole serve as
example and guidepost to those who must still question their faith in
our ways and means. It is good that you all question, without
conflict we stagnate and die. But your answers are available to you
if you only take a step back from your normal narrow focus in this
unlife and look with new perspective upon those who have earned their
high place in our society.
By becoming living demonstrations that our faith is not misplaced,
they keep you from becoming Conquered, they keep you from losing the
faith needed to exercise your Will upon the Danse itself. When we
lose our will, and lose our faith, we risk stumbling and falling.
Their example will allow you to pick yourself up before an enemy can
take advantage of your situation.
While I never got to speak to Alder Cadeyrn, and was only introduced
to him once in passing, his words on faith to this Covenant served
that purpose in my own Danse. Had they not been issued when they
were, I would have left this madhouse of a nation, because the
foolishness and rashness of my brothers and sisters in faith had
caused my own will to waver.
As a Covenant, our faith is wavering. We have lost so many of our
admired, our Alders, that our faith stumbles. But this is only
because we look at things with eyes focused on the here and now, and
not the perspective of centuries of endurance and steadfastness.
You want to know what you should do in these troubled nights?
Persists. Endure. See that each and every one of our traditions is
furthered, no matter how small and seemingly insignificant. Be an
example to other Invictus and other Kindred of why the Invictus must
be respected.
What do the admired do for you?
They give you hope that you too can earn your place, earn your
respect. And that you may endure and persist.
If you think that is trivial, then you do not understand our Covenant.
With regards,
Alder Erick Krieger
