Amazon = Fail
I know this has been lighting up LJ and such all day but I haven't been near a computer since before this broke.
Apparently Amazon is sensoring GLBTQ materials via stripping them of their sales rankings and therefore preventing them from showing up on best seller lists and anywhere near the top of searches. The claim is that they're doing this to prevent "adult" material popping up when "families" search Amazon.
This is all well and dandy, and perhaps understandable, but when you look at what has and has not been sensored you realize that's not the case. Mostly because books like Heather Has Two Mommies, a children's book, Ellen DeGeneres: A biography, Social Services for Gay and Lesbian Couples and The Well Of Loneliness have been stripped of their sales ranking,s to name a few.
Some books that still have a sales ranking include:
, Exercising the Penis: How to make your most prized organ bigger, harder & healthier, Super Beauties: Nude and Natural and Hot Cougar Sex: Steamy encounters with young men.
Umm, last I checked Playboy was running higher adult content than Ellen or the Heather and her mommies. Jezabel is attempting to keep a running list.
A petition has gone up at Care2 Petitionsite that can be found here that's looking to collect at least 10,000 signatures.
Also the girls at Smart Bitches have started a campaign to get their new definition of amazon rank googlebombed so that it's all that comes up when people google it. A full description can be found here but essentially they'd love it if you'd follow my example and link to their definition on your LJ and google search "amazon rank" and hit the little up arrow by it to keep it's height in the ratings.
I myself will not be purchasing with Amazon until Heather and her mommies are de-classified from being adult and explicit.
