Smoke!

Wow, what a way to start off the morning. I was sitting in our room with the boys while they were playing this game called "Tumblebugs" on the computer. Tim went out to the living room and then I hear him say, "I need help, come quick!"

We have this floor lamp, that we put in the corner next to the couch. Yesterday the boys were messing with it and it fell over across the back of the couch. No big deal. I stood it up before we went to bed and it fell over again. I left it there, figuring I'd mess with it in the morning when it was light and I had my contacts in.

Well, when Tim went out to the living room he tried to stand it up and when he did, smoke went billowing out everywhere! When I heard him call for help, I was thinking, "you need help standing up a little floor lamp? I went out expecting to see it in pieces or something (cause it screws together in three or four different places). But instead I see this big cloud of smoke, and Tim's carrying the lamp outside. There was still smoke coming from the corner of the living room and he told me to see if anything was on fire.

There happened to be a small fur rug that my grandparents had given me from New Zealand (sheepskin) and a bedsheet. I pulled those away and inspected them and there was no fire...but it was still smoking. I held my breath and looked closer. The base of the lamp, which was filled with some sort of concrete was lying there, shattered in several pieces. By this time, Tim had come back in and the smoke alarm in the hallway goes off and the boys start crying. I got my oven mitt (who knows if that thing was still hot) and gave it to Tim and I went outside with the boys.

The lamp was in sorry shape. The cord was totally melted and frayed, and it was still smoking a bit while we waited for the all-clear from Tim.

He got the smoke detector to stop and after he cleared everything away, we came back in. It was still a little smoky, but he had the fans going and the doors open. I found pieces of melted plastic from the cord on the back of the couch and on the floor.

So, it was a pretty 'exciting' morning. Thankfully we didn't wake up to the sound of the smoke alarm. That would've been worse. I'm glad no one was hurt and nothing but the lamp was destroyed.

Oh, and by the way Dave...it was the lamp you gave us. That tall black one. Thanks for almost burning down our house...heh.
