So I think I should start using this more. After all, my life just changed like, a lot, and I should document it, right?
I mean, I bought a house. That's sort of a big deal. Yes, I'm lucky in that my grandfather is equipped enough to invest and secure my down payment. But I still have a mortgage. I'm, like, a grownup. My neighborhood is working class, and I love it. Little houses (mine is large for the street, at a bit less than 1200 sqft, lots of dogs, lots of pickups...right now, lots of people out of work and asking to mow my lawn. Except I'm out of work right now too and can't pay anybody to mow my lawn. And it's Nashville, grass grows fast.
I mean, that's not entirely true, I HAVE work. I'm a grad student! They're paying me to go to school! I mean seriously, best job ever, right? This first year we have a two-semester course called Bioregulation, which is broken into twoish week cores addressing one particular topic (first core is proteins). This allows the entire class, coming in with different majors and different lab experience, to get up to speed. So the protein core is going to be a bit rough for me, but when we get into molecular and genetics, I'll be able to coast a bit. Then September 14 starts our first lab rotation. We have four this year, in four labs of our choosing. Six weeks projects. From those four labs, you pick your thesis lab where you'll spend the next four years. So, no pressure!
...our first day of orientation is at the Nashville Zoo. I'm inordinately pleased about this.
Although, oddly, the graduate school never sent me its orientation packet. And then the guy scared me to death when I called the registrar because he said I'd never accepted the admission offer. I was like, "Uh, I'm looking at the application screen right now, where it says 'answer received: accepted 3/13/09 4:43pm'." Idiots. So now I'm behind on my health forms and crap.
Friday, I'm going to the Creation Museum, near Cincinnati. You know, Ken Ham's, where they insist the earth is 6,000 years old and dinosaurs lived with humans! It's not just me, though, it's me and 250 of my closest skeptic friends. A Pharyngula horde is descending upon the museum. Watch the Twitter hashtag #CreoZerg for details on Friday.
I have a new puppy. She has boxerness. And Great Dane ears. And very, very sharp teeth. On the upside, she makes the Ribbie look like a well-behaved Goddess among dogs. So.
...except for how she's putting scratches in my BRAND NEW BACK DOOR DAMMIT.
