I have a new place to live.
just been approved for a fabulous studio apartment smack in the middle of downtown Portland. 6 blocks from the MAC, 12 from the RAC, I can now walk to work. I can walk to get my groceries. I'm 5 blocks from a max station. I no longer need a FUCKING CAR. I'm moving in tomorrow after I'm done teaching.
The building was built in 1911 and is, as a matter of fact, a registered historical landmark. They've taken great care to maintain the 1911 aesthetic and the room itself is thick with it. The hardwood floors are warm and dark, the moulding on the walls is very art-deco period, the light fixtures, the clawfoot tub, all of it. The original telephone from 1911 is still on the wall. How to decorate such a space, which already comes with so much character, is now my task. It's a small space so luckily I don't have much square-footage to cover. I'm looking forward to it.
This will be the first time I've ever lived alone. I'll finally get to find out how I like to live. I am so amazingly excited about this prospect. How I like to live. What I want. If you walk into my place it will be clear that I live there. That I live there.
I hope it will be a place that my friends and lovers will choose to come often. The prospect of lonliness frightens me slightly. I guess I want my cake and to eat it as well. To have a space that is mine, the keeping of which I share with no one. I'll keep you posted on how that goes.
