I am a proud slut, I have slept with lots of good ideas.

Top songs of the moment. safelight hath tagged me. I can do naught but obey.

» Long Way by Antje Duvekot
on the worn out heels of kerouac.
Idaho. Michigan. Washington. Arizona. Tennessee. South Dakota. California. A lovely folky travelling song. It's a little cliché, and some of the lyrics are a little trite (and people have got lost up there / in the home of the grizzly bear) but I get the feeling that that sort of stark, unpolished childlike observation is what she's aiming for. It is your archetypal adolescent road-trip song - that adult feeling combined with a sense of naiveté.

It's a soft and intimate song - a letter to someone loved, and in that sense it reminds me a lot of Dar Williams' Iowa (Traveling III) (only one of my favourite songs EVER, in case anyone missed the hundred times I've said so). It also makes me feel deeply sad and longing in the same way.

» Bridge Over Troubled Water by Johnny Cash & Fiona Apple
i will comfort you, i'll take your part
I'm not overly fond of this song, even Simon & Garfunkel's original, because I find it far too schmaltzy. Ad that's bad because I LOVE schmatlz. But, as I've often found, Johnny Cash's voice has the power to turn any song into something imbued with a thousand years of deep meaning and emotion. I bet he could do the same with the phone book or a Chinese takeaway menu.

» Scummy by Arctic Monkeys
she don't do major credit cards; i doubt she does receipts.
Alex Turner's sex appeal will forever remain a mystery to me. He looks like all the lads I went to school with.

Okay. Scummy/When The Sun Goes Down. Essentially the same song, but slight differences with the latter being the now-official name and album track. But the former - like most earlier versions of their album tracks - is so, so much better. The guitar sol from 50-1:15 is better for one, and the whole thing is more brash and energetic. The album version is more polished, but feels more washed out (though that could simply be a bad rip).

» I Touch Myself by The Bens
i search myself: i want you to find me.
Kweller, Lee, and Folds. They're so cute and indie it hurts.

Wholly Human by Alix Olson » you've got to watch how your god is used.
THIS is what I want Studio 60 to be. Alix Olson is a witty, acerbic, liberal, feminist poet - she says everything Sorkin does, but I find her so much more palatable.

it's the masses not the heavens that do the holy/wholly human work. Wordplay makes me hot.

» Advertising Space by Robbie Williams
there's no dignity in death, to sell the world your last breath.
When I haven't listened to Mr. Williams on a while, and all I've read is how he's screwed up and in rehab again, I forget that he's a really fucking good singer/songwriter. Or, like Elton John, excellent at interpreting other people's songs. Unlike other pop stars, I can believe that the emotions of his songs parallel his feelings as he's singing (though mostly it's the cocky, sarcastic arse songs like "Let Me Entertain You" and "Millenium" and "Kids"). I find this song quite affecting.

» J'en Ai Marre by Alizee
j'ai la peau douce dans mon bain de mousse.
Can't beat Moi, Lolita, but it's fun French pop. I really want to buy her album, "Gourmandises", but amazon.co.uk are still selling it for £12. wtf? Hmm. She's not as popular here as in Europe and Japan, maybe it'll be in the bargain bin of Music Zone...

» Quedate Luna by Devendra Banhart
¿Qué tomas lunita y porqué estas tan amarilla?
All I know is that I love this song and a couple of others I've heard, and I need to buy "Cripple Crow" and "Nino Rojo". I think he refers to his and similar styles of folk as "naturalisimo", but it's sometimes related/called freak folk or New Weird America, or something. Good stuff, but I'm just starting to look into it.

» Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go) by Garbage
they could not believe that such a body was for real.
Genderfuckery FTW. I rarely listen to Garbage (hur hur) and I forget how fun and wonderfully sexy their rocky songs are. Same with Muse.

Poll go baby go!
Fire Sign by The Gossip
but mary you can't help it, 'cos growing up is the hardest part.
Though I'm afraid I don't find her physically hot, I think Beth Ditto is fab and also talented and bad ass. Ditto the fun and sexy rocky-dance songs. Handclaps!

Bukowski by Modest Mouse
evil home stereo - what good songs do you know?

well all that icing and all that cake
i can't make it to your wedding but i'm sure i'll be at your wake
you were talk talk talkin' in circles that day
when you get to the point make sure that i'm still awake, okay?
I listen to Modest Mouse fairly often, but they don't inspire much thought. Not in a negative fashion - I just know I like them, and I find that satisfying enough. Quirky-juddery indie rock.

Funnily, the line god who'd want to be, god who'd want to be such an asshole? always makes me think of Kurt Vonnegut and this blog dedicated to artists self-portraits of their "asterisks".

Skin Is, My by Andrew Bird
let it be printed on every t-shirt in this land, on the finest of cottons and the hippest of brands.

my skin is
cold as her toes on the bathroom floor
run back to bed and slam the door
oh what a lovely sound.
Andrew Bird is... interesting. I'm only just getting into him, but anyone who can blend violins, Spanish sounds and (albeit soft-ish) rock os cool in my book. Adorable little love song.

Ryan Adams in little over twenty-four hours! God, I hope it's going to be a good one.
