I support stem cell research. I think we have a responsibility to explore subjects of study that could improve life; this is a responsibility that has been passed on to us from all previous generations and it cannot be shirked by a fearful minority that prefers to look fondly on a past that never existed. That being said the opposition to stem cell research isn't that unsurprising; pretty much every new technology from innoculations to television sets have been met first with paranoia, moralism, and panic before becoming accepted as so every day it is unworthy of comment. Stem cell research also needs to be understood better. While it would allow for advancements in cloning technologies it won't lead to the cloning of headless bodies or designer infants - in fact it's one of the only coloning technologies that defies such ideas by making them unncessary (why clone a whole new person after death when you can clone the failing organ that led to their death?). Also related but not addressed in your question this country seriously needs to reconsider the way health care, retirement, and social secuirty works. People are already living far longer than expected by the designers of these institutions and cloning, if legalized, would only push the average death age back further.
