After erasing Raito's memories and infusing him with the True Gaia Memory, the Museum Group set out to put a safeguard in place to keep Raito from falling into the wrong hands. That safeguard is Fang.

Created as a clone from Sonozaki Raito's extracted DNA, Fang was permanently infused with the Fang Memory. This memory sharpened his senses and fighting skills, and made him into a perfect guard dog for the Sonozaki Family's most valuable asset. While the permanent infusion of the Fang memory leaves Fang unable to change form like many other dophants, he is far faster and stronger than any other human of comparable size and age, and he has senses that rival those of certain animals.

Fang's purpose however is dual. His primary function is to act as Raito's guard, eliminating any threats that could come to claim the boy. His secondary function is to help Raito maintain a level of sanity needed for the Gaia operations. Fang functions as Raito's sole companion --more as a pet than a friend however-- and due to their close, biological link his mind is used as a stabilizer for Raito's. That this process leaves Fang more than a little unbalanced is of no concern to the Museum Group. Dogs, after all, can be replaced.

Fang has never known any other humans apart from selected members of the Sonozaki group and Raito, nor has he ever been outside. Due to this, he has no understanding of how to function as a regular human being. From the moment of his 'birth', he was drilled to protect Raito and there is nothing he takes as serious as this duty, not shying away from any method necessary to achieve his purpose. When alone with Raito, however, Fang has been known to act almost childlike, content to sit and watch while Raito works, occasionally chirping in encouragement.

Fang is capable of speech, the basics of reading and writing and killing. Lots and lots of killing. There have been occasions where not all bits and pieces of his victims have been found, though no one knows --or cares to find out-- where the missing parts went.
