We had a really great sacrament meeting where our bishop spoke for a few minutes about New Year's resolutions. He said a thing that's kind of obvious, but that doesn't really occur to you until it's pointed out. ...I mean, it didn't really occur to me. Maybe it's occurred to everyone else. Anyway, it's this: When you do something you've never done, you learn things you never knew. And I just really like that.
I may or may not mention this every time New Year's comes along, but we don't often make resolutions...I think mostly because we just don't think that far ahead. My excuse is that we should always be trying to improve every day, and we shouldn't need the calendar to change to make that happen. But this year, it just so happened that December was when we were thinking about things we'd like to accomplish, and the holidays make it kind of tricky to start any new projects, because there are so many activities and plans already going on. So by virtue of timing, we have some New Year's resolutions.
...Mine's not really very specific, though. I think I had a more specific one, but it got all blurred during the flurry of holiday activity. Wait, I think I might remember the specifics now that I'm trying to. XD I definitely want to do something involving music, and I think the specific thing I came up with is that I want to be able to play more music from Miraculous on the piano. So I'm going to have to listen to a few scenes several times until the background music is in my head firmly enough that I can hopefully maybe transcribe it onto some sheet music. (Another potential resolution would be to learn how to play music by ear and/or improvise...) ...Then today I pulled out my lyre instead, so clearly my goals are not very focused. I'm working on that. XD
Athena's resolution is kind of the same as her constant goal to get better at French, but the more specific version is to get more comfortable speaking it out loud. I mean, she does speak it out loud at home--she's constantly saying random things in French, and usually it's something I heard in Miraculous so I can figure it out, but sometimes it's just like, "Yeeeah, I don't know what that means." But it's only a short phrase here or there, like "j'arrive" or something. She needs to be able to speak, like, continuously, if she ever wants to hold conversations, which she very much does. So the specific goal is to find a speaking partner...probably using italki or something like that. (She's super excited about it because she just loves talking to strangers. (I'm hoping the use of italics conveys the very heavy sarcasm in that statement. She's even more terrified of people than I am. That's why she's not going to worry too much about it until the new year actually starts. That, and all the tutors on italki will probably have holiday plans of their own.))
So those are some of our thoughts as we get closer to the new year. Wow, where does the time go? Tomorrow I'll make our "year in review" post! So far it's looking like we won't have a collage of manga we translated, so we may or may not post a list, depending on how we're feeling.
Today I'm thankful for the idea of learning new things, getting to watch lots of Miraculous today, also getting to watch some Fraggle Rock, also managing to be pretty productive for having a short workday, and getting to play with my lyre.
