Unhappy discoveries
Our schedule is like...in Disney's Cinderella when Gus is trying to pick up all the kernels of corn. If we could just remove one of those kernels of corn, everything would fit, but we can't figure out which one is okay to remove, so we try to squish that last one in, and then everything goes kablooey. ...It hasn't actually gone kablooey yet; it's just threatening to at all times. And because we're like Gus from Cinderella, we look at our schedule and go, "If we do it like this, we might be able to play Paris Under Siege on release day..." We just...hope springs eternal, I guess. (I mean, there are signs that we could pull it off.)
Anyway, one of the things in this schedule is In/Spectre, and we just recently learned something about In/Spectre that we have mixed feelings about. The signs were there a long time ago, so we could have figured it out, but we're old and tired, so choose to remain oblivious. Blissfully ignorant, as Athena puts it.
The point is, they've been simulpubbing In/Spectre, and we had no idea. We had clues. Like, it used to be a new volume would come out in Japan, and our publisher would want the translation yesterday if possible. More recently, months have gone by before they seem to be like, "Oh yeah, we need you to do this." Even before that, the agency through which we imagine these simulpub translations are being done emailed us and said, "Hey, you wanna translate In/Spectre for us for half what you've been getting paid for it?" We were like, "Uh...no?"
We were concerned at the time that we would be removed from the series if we said no. Even more alarming was that they also asked us to translate Noragami for them, and since that's one of our very favorites, we definitely did not want that one taken away from us. Fortunately, the branch of Kodansha through which we translate for the print edition told us that we would still be translating the print edition, or we would have had to do some serious soul searching about whether or not we could afford to drop our rates (the answer is probably not, but we might have tried). It's just too detrimental to our health to work constantly, even on series that we adore.
Anyway, the reason I mention it here is mostly to let people know that the simul-pubbed chapters on the K Manga app were translated by somebody else. I haven't read them, so I don't know how they are. And the other reason I wanted to mention it is in case K Manga credits the simulpub translators (which it should), and readers saw those credits and were like, "Why didn't the Nibleys translate this? Don't they like the series anymore?" I wanted to reassure those people that yes, we do love both Noragami and In/Spectre. There are just circumstances that were beyond our control, so now there will be two translations available! And you can pick which one you like best.
Today I'm thankful for getting to translate Noragami and In/Spectre, our schedule not having exploded yet, the (delusional?) hope that we can maybe play Paris Under Siege on release day, finally managing to almost spell "siege" correctly before Athena pointed out my mistake, and getting to watch Truth and Lies.
