It's a little...crunchy
A mere two days after I come onto LiveJournal and talk about Edens Zero being in limbo, we wake up to the news that Crunchyroll has gotten the streaming rights for the United States. This is good news, we guess? At the very least, now we can watch it. And we did! We watched both episodes that are available, and they were pretty darn good. We felt like the pacing...or the energy? had been taken down a notch. Not too too much, I think. The scene with Weisz and Laguna was still the best.
There a few minor issues with Crunchyroll. ...Well, one of them might be a major issue. Crunchyroll has had more languages than English and Japanese available to watch in the US, so we're optimistic that we'll get to watch the French dub...except that we know we can't watch the French dub of Fruits Basket, so we're also concerned. And if we can't watch the French dub, for us, that's a major issue. All we can do is wait and hope at this point.
The other issue is that Crunchyroll won't let us watch with Japanese subtitles. We like to have captions on when we watch TV, because the walls in our apartment complex are thin, so we keep the volume down so as not to disturb the neighbors. And since Japanese is our second language, it really helps to have captions on, in case we can't make something out, or they use unfamiliar words that we can intuit from context and kanji.
But we can't have the Japanese ones with Crunchyroll, so it's English or nothing. And...we tried the English, but after a few minutes, we decided it would be better for everyone if we turned them off. And now we're at war with ourselves because we can't decide whether or not we should post a public rant about the subtitles. We know no one is trying to do a bad job! And we know that simulcasts are on a really tight schedule, so if the translator would just copy our translations, it would save them time, and we would be forced to not complain about it, because even if we were like, "They should have done it like this!" we would check our translations and be forced to admit, "Oh, that's exactly what we had."
So we don't want to go online and point out someone's faults, but we're also very passionate about this story, and sometimes the way localization gets done (not just for this series), it feels like the English version is not really the same story as the original one. So we want to tell all our friends, "This is what they really said!" And so here we are. Turning off the subtitles so that we can remain in blissful ignorance...but still thinking, in the backs of our minds, that when our sister watches this series with her husband, she'll have no idea what's actually going on. ...Well, she'll get the gist of it, at least.
Never mind that. The important thing. Is that they translated 銀河六魔将 as the Six Galactic Generals, and we are like, "WHAT IS A TERMS LIST EVEN GOOD FOR!?!?!?!?" 銀河六魔将 is on the terms list! Of course it is! It's a major group! It's supposed to be Oracion Seis Galactica (with an accent mark on the second O in oracion and the second A in galactica). So now we're just adding that to the list of reasons terms lists are a waste of time. Or at least, the list of reasons they annoy us personally. (We did just check our terms list and found out that the Oracion Seis were first mentioned at the end of all the Guilst stuff back in season one, so it's not unlikely that Crunchyroll did check a terms list...just not the one for the manga. Sigh.)
Anyway. We're calming down now. Tomorrow is Easter! That's exciting!
