Another busy Saturday
Oh man, what a day. We had a ward activity tonight, so we knew we wouldn't have much time to goof off. We got our usual Saturday stuff done and had just finished the rounds on Animal Crossing. We hadn't yet decided if we were going to indulge in a little bit of Pokemon (or Pokemon Snap) before doing more research for work, and we were about to get a snack when Grawp called.
So the decision was made for us, and we played Minecraft with him for two hours. When he was forced to give up the Switch, Hagger asked if Athena could stick around and join him in a How to Train Your Dragon world. Of course we couldn't say no to that, so that's what we did...although we were basically starving by that time (it was our own fault; we got back from the grocery store and were like, "We don't need lunch now, we can eat later!"). But at one point Athena had wandered too far from Hagger, and the kids told her to stop moving so they could find her. She took that opportunity to put down the controller and get the Peanut Butter Snickers we had on hand for just such an emergency. (That's not actually why we had them, but it was rather timely.)
We'd told the children that we had a ward activity to go to, so we were going to have to leave, but they never seemed to process that information, so when they finished dinner about fifteen minutes before we had to go, they called back and now it was Hermie's turn to play. We couldn't say no to her, either, because when Grawp relinquished the Switch to Hagger, we could hear her in the background lamenting, "But I wanted to play most!" Fortunately(?), she wanted to play Bed Wars, and if done just right, a game of that can be finished in about fifteen minutes.
So Athena built a bridge to Hermie's island so the child could easily get to Athena's island and destroy Athena's bed, then she left some pickaxes on Hermie's island so she'd have some extra tools in case she needed them, and then she put the controller down and got ready to go while we waited for Hermie to destroy her. (Interestingly enough, we think the children have not caught on to the fact that Athena does this on purpose, and that they believe she is truly that incompetent.) (We do understand the value in teaching children that they can't expect to win at everything, but since we don't really care about the children being determined to improve at Minecraft, and we had somewhere else to be...)
The game finished and we made it out the door just as our ride was pulling up. The activity was dinner and a movie, and thankfully they had hamburgers, so we were able to get enough to eat. The movie was The Other Side of Heaven, which was...a lot of movie. I mean, you all know we generally dislike movies, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that we didn't really enjoy it. The visuals were pretty stunning in many places, though, and it did have some enjoyable scenes. It just didn't really tell a cohesive story, but we should have expected that, since it was based on a memoir.
When we got home, we needed to cheer ourselves up, so we turned on Animal Crossing and went to have a K.K. concert. Athena decided to let K.K. pick the song (because it's the surest way to get one we don't have yet)...and he picked K.K. Dirge. Thanks a lot, K.K. But after that, we requested Mountain Song, and all was right with the world again. And then we indulged in a Pokemon battle...and lost. Ah well.
Today I'm thankful for managing to get the necessary stuff done, having our copy of Skyward Sword (hopefully someday soon we'll have time to play it!), having an okay time at the activity before the movie started, having a lovely time playing with the children, and getting enough to eat today (...I think).
