Okay, I may have done this rant before, but in response to the recurring Dany/Drogo posts I see here and on Tumblr every now and then I need to ask: WHY DO PEOPLE SHIP THIS? HOW DO PEOPLE SHIP THIS? I'd only seen the scenes the one time because I found them so off-putting, so I felt that I had to re-watch to confirm I wasn't remembering them wrong, and: nope. I may be a giant virgin, but I'm still preeeetty sure when the girl is crying - it's rape. Like, unless it's tears of joy - and it sure as fuck don't look like it - she is very definitely not wanting to have sex there, which by the actual dictionary definition is rape.
So what is the arguement then, she's not getting raped because they're married? WRONG, that's still rape, atleast by today's slightly less fucked-up standards, so lets just get that one ticked off and out of the way right off the bat. You can still be raped, by your husband, if you're married - especially if that marriage is basically your brother selling you off like a commodity.
And look, I know this is a fictional world of fictional characters, and I'll admit I ship a hell of a lot more unhealthy and in-reality-unsuited-for-each other ships on TV and in books that I would never ever find acceptable in real life, but I'd like to think I'm not THAT delusional (and if I ever get that delusional I hope someone points it out to me so I can check myself into the loony bin). Like, I draw the line at abusiveness, because I wouldn't wish that even on a fictional character that I hated, let alone one I really love. And I know it's set in a fictional time and place where this would not legally - or even morally for a lot of people - count as rape, and if you're claiming to live in Westeros then I'll accept that as a valid argument (because clearly you are beyond logical reasoning), but for the rest of us in the 21th century of the real world, that is wrong. In all ways, period and end of story.
The thing that really baffles me is gif sets of these two, you know, the shippy kind like
this one. It even has "#otp" as a tag. Like, how do people actually make those? "Oh yeah, I'm gonna make a gif set of how cute Dany and Drogo are together *rubs hand together*, lessee, I'll just skip past these scenes where she's being sold to him and then cries while being repeatedly raped ...."? I'd suggest they skip those episodes entirely, but that one I linked has a gif from the pilot in it so: nope, that's not it. Is the arguement that she falls in love with him, so therefor she's giving him some sort of retro-active okay or pass on the rape thing? Because I don't think it works like that, either. Also, there's this thing called the Stockholm Syndrome, and I'm pretty sure if you look it up it has a gif of Dany making googly eyes at Drogo and nothing else. If she's not a textbook example then no one is.
Those are seriously the only arguements I can even think of as theoretically being put forward here, and I like to think I have a pretty good ability at imagining different viewpoints. So how do their brains actually reason with this? Are they just shipping them 100% based on the actors looking good together while completely ignoring the words they are saying and actions they are doing? No really HOWWWW, tell me I must know! It's like finding out someone truly believes the air is made up of marshmallows, I just ... cannot understand this is a commonly accepted ship.
ROFL, I just found this, ironically on the exact same Tumblr where that gif set I linked is from:
Way to inadvertantly summarize yourself and my reaction to you in two gifs, random Tumblr person! (BTW, if anyone's wondering why I'm posting this here and not on Tumblr then ... well, clearly you've never been on Tumblr. :p) And I guess I should just shrug it off like one of those inexplicable things - you know, like how some people think crocs are valid fashion choice - but the world already has too many mysteries. This is one I want the answers to. Offering a reward for any clues to solve this mystery: actual reward to be determined and may possibly only be theoretical.
Meanwhile, while looking it up in the dictionary - because I do my goddamn research - this is what was on the page:
... Yeeeah. I feel like maybe you want to rethink that, Dictionary.com. Unless you've misspelled the name and it's actually Dick-tionary. (Ahaha, beware of my rapier wit yes okay I'll go to bed now.)
