I've had my Provisional licence for a year and a day, oh the memories:
Please note: I've marked some dangerous things I've done here. Please be advised that they were all either mistakes I've learnt from, or done in controlled conditions
- Travelling to Miranda 2-3 times per week (Miranda being where my work is, where the biggest shopping centre in proximity is and also very hard to get to by public transport), wasting a kilometre of driving because I have to go round the block to reach the place that's just on the other side of the (divided) Kingsway.
- Defying the laws of the car park and exiting work through the entrance, and sometimes entering through the exit.
- Abusing my privileges and parking in my KFC car park (with the menacing, yet uninforced sign "KFC PATRONS ONLY, 20 MINUTE LIMIT, OFFENDERS WILL BE TOWED AT OWNER'S EXPENSE") to go to the shops instead
- Studying maps the first 17 years of my life, to get lost countless times on the road.
- My mum telling me not to speed as she goes down the Woronora Bridge (70km/h zone) at 95km/h
- Fighting with parents to borrow the car when I wanted
- Taming the almighty red beast: the 1980s Alfa Romeo GTV.
- Managing to pull up at the wrong side when filling up petrol
- Driving a Toyota and turning on the wipers when I want to indicate, since both the Peugeot and the Alfa have the indicator stalk on the left side
- Getting insanely lost in the city - where sense of direction fails you because of one way streets, road blocks, no right/left turns and all
- Ripping the bumper off the Alfa when dropping Justin home on his ultranarrow street with ultrahigh bumpers
- Being tailgated by policemen who want to catch me driving over 70km/h on the Princes Hwy at Yarrawarrah where the 90km/h section ends (after they realised I'm not that stupid, they proceed to accellerate through a yellow light)
- The first time I was random breathtested, near Tom Ugly's bridge, thinking the police cars were there for an accident, realising they were RBTs at the last second, almost hitting the policeman. Heh.
- The time I drove home leaving my licence at work, driving past some RBT units
- The time I drove without my P plates, when some guy almost ran into the back of me
- Driving down Alfords Point Road at 130km/h, my current land speed record.
- All the paranoia when going past speed cameras (especially the one at Kogarah). The one at Lugarno (which also has a red light camera beofre it) flashed when I drove past it. Turns out it was for another car, but it left me in suspense.
- Driving on country roads when it was pouring and foggy. Fun and suicidal!
- Driving in Mittagong when it was actually flooded (with Winston, David Qi and Richard Chung phoenetically pronouncing lol, omg, and wtf, I've got a video of it somewhere)
- Making it safely all the way from Port Macquarie in wet conditions on the country road, to almost run into this reckless overtaker in Auburn
- Being designated Dave at a pissup, having driven for a week, and informing Merrick that I am not going to drive him home in the boot.
- Taking the M5 in peak hour thinking I'll save time. Big mistake
- Parking at Dan Murphys in Hurstville at a 20 degree angle. In Vlad's words: Nothing better says reckless teenager who's just turned 18.
- Running red lights outside my house (don't worry, I stopped before I made sure no one else was coming). Rebellious
- All the fun driving
