Lawful Access

Oct 04, 2011 19:21

The Canadian Federal government announced an initiative after winning their majority last May. They wanted to force Canadian citizens to pay their Internet Service Providers to set up equipment to record their every online transaction. Any police officer would be able to stroll into any ISP of an afternoon and demand to see this data, without a warrant, because he suspects some citizen might be up to something. The Tories call this initiative "Lawful Access."

Last week, this totalitarian legislation was removed from the "Omnibus Crime Bill." As I'd feared, however, "Lawful Access" was simply moved to its own bill, which will be put before Parliament later in the year. This sort of thing is why I don't trust the Tories and feared for Canada and myself when they won a majority!

I don't know about you, but I don't look forward to encrypting all my emails, in or out, with PGP just so the police don't casually discover that I like Furry porn. It might not be against the law, but it really is none of their GD business!
