You might want to stand back and don those squee goggles. Because this evening I attending a taping of The Daily Show, the episode that airs tonight at 11 pm on Comedy Central.
A few years back, I attended two tapings of Conan O'Brien and one of Letterman. A lot of it was the same as you describe, so now I don't have to bother describing them myself...

I've done something similar to that once. I attended a taping of a TV show, but I don't know if you'll remember the show though. It was one of those old Donahue type shows, only with journalist Rolanda Watts. It was called (surprise surprise) The Rolanda Show. I picked up tickets while I was in college. Their taping schedule was rather inconvenient for me, but I managed to sneak a rare weekend taping. The experience was pretty much like what you've described it with a warm-up guy and stage manager, etc. etc. I have the video of myself in the audience if anyone wants to arrange a meet to watch it, but I have to warn you, it will probably be incredibly dull compared to The Daily Show.

Living where we do, it's not that hard to find tapings.
When I was in high school, the big show to go to a taping for was The Cosby Show, which filmed at Kaufman-Astoria. Never got around to doing that.
Anyway, it was an interesting experience, moreso just because I was so into the show I was getting to see. All of the other shows I watch don't use that studio format, they're all cinematic filmed on location fiction shows.

I even got to walk right by THE DESK, since to get to the seats, the audience just walks right across the set. I could have touched THE DESK. Oooo.
