Emotional intelligence, yes. Karen Gillan brings out Amy's various kinds of strengths and emotional layers so, so beautifully, and I think the writing was also top-notch in this ep. It was sad but amazing to watch too.

See, I agree with everything you're saying--except that you think it's no longer a kids' show. Kids get some of these things better than adults; I would have been all over this episode as a 9-year-old. :)

It seems written as an all-ages thing, with a lot put in for adults and kids. Which is maybe different than a kid-friendly show would've been written back in the day. The perception has shifted about the value of kids TV and literature in general.

Batman: The Animated Series was expressly for kids but they also made it purposefully so adults could enjoy it too.
