An opinion on Lisa Braeden

x-posted from my tumblr. Because I've seen a certain viewpoint about 237 times in SPN fandom and hardly ever see the counter-view. If the counter-view is somehow a majority opinion all over the place and I missed it, then I'm sorry I didn't see it. Also, I have absolutely no issue with those who dislike Lisa's character, they have their reasons, as I have my reasons for liking her.

That Lisa is canon isn’t my argument for why it’s a valid pairing. It’s valid to me because the relationship pushed my buttons and it got me to thinking.

While I agree no one must accept it or like it, whether she was a believable, likeable, interesting character or not, whether she fit with Dean and into the show or not, is a subjective opinion. Those who do like her have equally valid lists of why she worked and why we liked her. How about her sense of humor, her courage, the fact that she raised a child on her own while juggling a career, her willingness to break rules, the caring she showed Dean when he was at his lowest, and that she didn’t hesitate to call him on his bullshit. Gosh, what a horrible character.

Lisa didn’t feel forced to me, I didn’t feel like the show pushed anything or had an agenda. It was a story for Dean. It was an intriguing new perspective on his character, and a valid yet troubled love story.

But what do I know about Supernatural and how the show is supposed to work, anyway, right? Since most of Supernatural fandom seems to have decided she was forced, boring, didn’t fit, and that it’s completely inexplicable that she could care for Dean or Dean could care for her. Evidently anyone who liked it doesn’t understand Dean, or the show, or good writing.

ETA: also, what blackcat333_99 says here about Lisa and free will and destiny. Yes.

oh fandom, supernatural, fandom
