Finished watching Mag7

thespatz was right, the back half of Mag7 season 2 is awesome. The show is uneven but much smarter than it looks, and at moments it's outright great, truly gritty, or atmospheric, or heartclenchy even though it isn't wanting to go too dark and stays mosty in the escapist mode. Also some truly incredible performances, from the leads and the guest stars ( Read more... )

Jerry Wanek is awesome. His stuff on Dark Angel always amazes me, as does SPN.

So funny, I was admiring the overall look of Mag7, and then found the Jerry Wanek connection and well NO WONDER.

Instead we have Vin with his face falling a mile and giving Chris a WOUNDED look and "fine if that's how it is then I'm going ::very quiet stomp::" OH VIN.

That ep is so shippy, it's wonderful. I really wish there could have been more eps to follow up on Chris and Vin's epic trust issues. Are you planning to dip into the fic at all? If so, I can rec some astounding work.

It really is! Hee, the whole series is very shippy, with something for everyone.

I would love some recs.

Jerry Wanek! ♥

I adore Chris and Mary, even while I waffle on whether they're a good idea for each other or not. Great friends, possibly a disaster as a romance. And then there's Vin. *laughs* The slash just writes itself. Luckily, this show reminds me a bit of NCIS, in the way you can pair almost anyone with anyone else and it'll come out plausible.

Recs! I haven't thrown any of my bookmarks up yet, so let's prioritize: you looking for gen, slash, het, casefiles, epics, etc, etc? If you just want to dive right into the deep end, there's a massive compendium of recs at Death Dogs (skip to the bottom for index). Variable quality and it hasn't been updated in years, but all at minimum readable and usually good.

Are you familiar with the AU/shared universe situation in the fandom? It's kinda unique.

Gen about any of the characters. Chris/Vin or Chris/Mary or Vin/Chris/Mary. I suspect I'd have a particular button for Vin and Mary teaming up to save Chris. Casefiles or epics or character studies. I'm not much for AU's when I'm first getting into a fandom, maybe later, but yes, tell me about this shared universe thing!

The whole series was shot in Bordertown, when they weren't out on the range somewhere. I came to Mag7 late, by Netflix, and AHBL just haunted me every step that was taken in that "town."

I think you're thinking of the tv series Bordertown, which was filmed in B.C., and they used that set for AHBL. Mag7 was filmed in the US, in California and Arizona.

Wow, thanks. I wonder if the AZ location is still in use? Both places look a lot alike. But then I guess most frontier towns did.

The show was shot at a place called Melody Ranch, which is still in use though I suspect rather infrequently with the dearth of Westerns these days.

♥ My recs for you to get you started: Mag 7 recs at crack_van. I did a turn of recs there, too, so you can find my personal favorites.

As for authors, for Chris/Vin you cannot do wrong with true_enough of course and then maygra though she mostly writes/wrote in the ATF AU universe (it's like a parallel AU where the seven are in modern time members of the an ATF unit in Denver, Colorado). I also wouldn't miss Painted Eyes's epics, For Faith and Moved by Silent Hands.

Happy reading, bb.
