I was just thinking about Susan Cooper, before I even saw the post. That approach would work beautifully this season, wouldn't it? And Dean not wanting to accept doing it that way, struggling with it. Also, I keep thinking about Ruby last season telling Sam there will be collateral damage and he'll have to do things he doesn't like doing. Fine line between the methods of the demonic side and the side of the angels, possibly.
Now I'm rewatching the ep for the third time. The more I think about it, the more I'm all gleeful about this season.
I've read a lot of trepidation about introducing an Angel as well as God and that it will end in clean-cut good vs. evil. But all I can think of that it was God who sent floods, pestilence and other destruction, usually executed by his angels. In general they are far, far more terrifying than demons can ever hope to be. As Castiel aptly proved.
There's nothing I've seen in SPN to date that makes me think this will be clean-cut good vs. evil. I love the idea that Castiel and his kind could be like Cooper's Light -- they aren't NICE, they will cause harms for the greater good and they don't have the luxury of mercy. I think the demon side and the angelic side are both going to be ruthless; they just have different ultimate goals.
It's so hard to speculate, the season could go so many different places with this. It could be the ruthless cold sort of good, but it is GOOD, the better option. Or both sides could prove not a good option and bad for humanity. Demon vs. angels war with humanity caught in the crossfire? Dunno.

Oh.
Oh, interesting.
And yeah, angels are not fluffybunny sweetness and light. Angels are the cold white flame. Ask Pharaoh. Ask Moses, for that matter.

Somehow I can't see SPN doing fluffybunny sweet angels.
If we get to see a flaming sword later in the season, I will squirm with glee. If Dean wields a flaming sword? I won't be coherent for DAYS.
