There's a kind of hug in "Home" after Dean untangles Sam from the lamp cord.
The big hug in "Shadow" was a reunion hug, which we never saw for the brothers because first time: sparing, "Wendigo" hanging from roof in serious pain, "Scarcrow" tied to tree, then being chased by scarecrow, "The Benders" trapped in cage. Plus we've skipped over some, so they may have hugged. They hug in my mind. a lot.
You're right, "Home" had an almost hug. The sparring in the pilot: good example of how they're comfortable being physical with each other, yet still, no hugs.
I consider that scene in Home a hug, even though Sam was still catching his breath and the scene was close up and short. Dean clearly pulled Sam in. It wasn't a hugging Dad in Shadows type of bear hug but it was a comforting/it's okay type of hug.
I agree. It's such a hesitant hug, too, like Dean's so relieved Sam's not dead, and they just don't DO hugs, these two, yet Dean wanted to comfort Sam, and himself even more. So he *sort of* hugged his brother.
Thanks! The show just keeps making me want to *talk* about it. Fanfic is usually my primary way of dealing with that but for some reason SPN also makes me want to analyze everything to bits. *g*
I love it! I still haven't seen the first 10 episodes and hoping they'll run reruns this summer, so I really love reading stuff like this because I have an idea of things, but I'm not sure how accurate it is. I think I'd enjoy it even if I had seen all the episodes, though. I like to pick things apart and/or analyze them, too, when something strikes me. :-)
I hope you get caught up. The first half of the season was so different than the last quarter. It was all snarky, scary, funny MOTW and then *wham*, the show broke my heart. The last three episodes of the season were just...wow.
I sgree that there's a hug in Home, we just don't really get to see it. Dean's got his arms around Sam, untangling the cord in the back, then he throws the cord away and pulls Sam closer, and Sam sorta goes to him as well... and they cut to a scene change without showing us exactly how the hug goes or how long it lasts for. There are also arm-grabbing events that basically count as embraces.
A hug scene would be nice. So would some work-out scenes. I wanna see them practicing and keeping in shape, spotting each other for weight-lifting and doing target practice with guns and bows, wrestling, that sort of stuff.
That's such a good decription of that not-hug in "Home."
Yay! Sparring, definitely. And they'd be physically comfortable with it. And yet...not with the hugging. Some families are just like that, they care for each other but aren't demonstrative--and yet Dean and Sam are demonstrative, as you said, "arm-grabbing." So fascinating! I wonder if they all sat down when they started the season and Eric Kripke or David Nutter told them, "Okay, your characters just don't hug. They hug Dad, not each other," or it's something Ackles and Padalecki evolved as they went on. It must be on purpose.
Good question. I'm not completely clear on it myself, because sometimes "meta" is used to describe talking about fandom itself. But it's also used for anything discussing the text, as opposed to creating text. A fanfic isn't meta (well, it can be, but more subtly) because it is in itself text. I think. But if we're talking directly about the characters in canon, then that's meta.
No idea where the word comes from; smarter minds than mine have probably tried to sort it out over at metafandom at some point.
