Fun With Telling People Who They Really Are

Mar 30, 2008 21:03

It's good to know that all the beautiful people are polyfi. There's just something about being open to other relationships that makes a person - what am I saying, we're talking about women here - that makes a girl uglier ( Read more... )

Admittedly, I'm not hugely involved in the giant poly social scene, but I've seen some of those kinds of people in other sociosexual contexts. Admittedly, they are gross generalizations, but it wasn't supposed to be a scientific treatise on the subject, just an object of humor. As with most humor, not everyone finds the same things funny, nor should they.

I'm not quite sure what's offensive or snarkworthy about it, but you seem to be rather irked. Care to share the reason??

Humor is not usually a thinly veiled rant about "why can't everyone be just like me?" This guy's tirade was.

How so? Does he say that people should be like him? He says that he doesn't want to be involved with the scene as he sees it, so he's personally a Snob/Picky combo, and he says so in the comments. So where do you get that he wants everyone to be like him?

It's not hard to read between the vines and notice the sour grapes.

Ok, so you're reading things into his words that he didn't write. I can accept that if you can admit it to everyone as you just did.

I'm not doing any more or less interpretation than you are.

Yes you are; you are "reading between the vines." laurel_valiant seems to be taking what is actually written in the entry (and comments).

Unless you have direct access to the author's thoughts, in reading what they meant and interpreting it to construct your own theory of what they were thinking, you are doing just that: interpreting.

There is a big difference between reading what they wrote and "reading between the lines" to infer what they "meant." The latter is more likely influenced by one's biases than the former, especially if others disagree with the interpretation.

If you think that "reading without biases" is possible, you can probably expect a call from President Bush the next time there's a vacancy on the Supreme Court.

Woot; I think that would be the coolest job!

I was amused. But then again, I see myself as a version of his "Polyfi" who's simply too busy for relationships right now. Sort of comes with the whole laidback thing and the not taking everything as a personal affront thing with a side dish of no one gets out alive so life is really not inherently serious business.

I mean, I'm just saying.
