We will use our brains. Of course, a dog that has been bred to hunt for generation after generation will forget his prey drive and instinct to mother a stray kitten! You should let them stay together all the time, and never expect the bad to happen. When your dog dies in the arms of a shelter worker, b/c you couldn't stand that he is what he is and his prey drive overwhelmed his maternal instinct, he will not thank you.
My younger sister was out shopping at the mall and driving home, when she saw a funny looking box on the side of the road, a kennel-like box. She pulled over to look inside, and inside she found three kittens. My sister took one, and she had her two friends take the other two.
Well, in a very dog dominated house, when she called me from her cell phone and said she was bringing a kitten home, I was nervous. I didn't want it in the house until it was wormed and checked out. As soon as that happened, she brought it home. I know my larger dog would have no problem.. she loves tiny things. But I was worried about Mozart. He can be a bully sometimes.
Boy, did he prove me wrong. Mozart's behaviour is what I would call for him, bizarre. He delicately picks up the kitten by the scruff and carries it to "his blanket." He lets it cuddle against him, and if it moves to get off of the blanket he gets up, and puts it back onto the blanket. He let's the kitten "pounce" his nose, and even bat at his stubby tail. The kitten has exclusive access to everything that is Mozarts including his toys, his bones, and his food dishes (I think the big dog is jealous!). He will not allow the big dog near it, or certain people at that. I thought it would be me defending the kitten from the dogs, but oddly, it is Mozart protecting the kitten from everything. For now, the kitten is staying in Mozart's old crate, and last night, Mozart made such a point that he was to sleep in the crate with the kitten -- and that it what he did. During the day he watches the kitten like a hawk. His self-designated "new job" makes him sleepy because the kitten is always on the go.
He amazes me sometimes. Just when you think you know him, the little buggr does something that takes me by complete surprise. I guess Mozart just has a warm spot in his heart for kittens.
