I have a tendency to fill out online thingys to get coupons for free dog food, which I donate to shelters and rescues. I got this in my email today. Isn't it lovely? Almost as good as that wonderful BENEFUL

*Ground yellow corn--YAY ALLERGIES *meat and bone meal--YAY, RANDOM ANIMALS *corn gluten meal--MORE CORN *animal fat--MORE RANDOM ANIMALS *animal digest--Doesn't THAT sound good? *added color--Mmm, cancer and allergies *menadione sodium bisulfite complex--Cancer! Banned in Europe for human consumption, but hey, it's just a dog!
Bone meal isn't bad for dogs, though. :) And if your dog doesn't want to or has problems with raw smaller bones, grinding them into a powder or "meal" helps them absorb the nutrients. So yes, in this case, what is good for the flowers IS good for the dog! But that doesn't mean Purina is doing a good thing for dogs.
My favorite: animal digest. Contrary to popular opinion, with the exception of whole preys consumed, dogs and their wild counterparts don't generally munch on the rumen contents or "animal digest" of their prey. Yucko.
I mean is there ANY meat in that food? Like actual meat.
I love it when they don't say what animal it comes from. My coworkers rave about how great Bil Jac frozen is, so I went to look at it today. Gag! Almost every ingredient is "animal this" or "that by products". There's even "milled cereal products?" What the hell is that?
Milled cereal products are the result of luring a bunch of really cool cereals together, have them mill and gossip amongst themselves in a large silo and then mushing them all together!
Seriously... gross? Yeah... anyways. I was totally disgusted by it. Wouldn't feed it to my enemy's dog. It doesn't specify meats, it doesn't specify grains. What the hell is it? No one really knows....
