Going to the school on the morning bus wasn’t unusual for the seven year old Choi Minho.

Every morning his mother woke him up, get him dressed and made him have breakfast before 7:20. Then, after saying goodbye to his grandma, both walked to the bus stop.

This day, as every other day, Minho said hi to the old lady who always was waiting there when he arrived. The woman gave him a warm smile and a chocolate, as always, and then Minho sat next to her to watch the very same people he always saw on his way to school.

Someone caught his attention. It was a boy next to the businessman who always wore a blue suit. He seemed to have Minho’s age, his hair was a dark shade of brown same as his eyes. Minho noticed that the boy was pouting, seeming upset for something.

For Kibum, it was absolutely unusual use the bus. His father always took him to school on his superb black Mercedes, after Kibum had dressed himself and ate the delicious breakfast their cook had made for him.

“Umma, I don’t want to go” Kibum complained, looking at his mother.

“Listen Kibum, your father can’t take you to school today” the woman said “You have to be a good boy and take the bus with me. Okay?”

“But I don’t want to. It’s dirty” Kibum said pouting.

A soft laugh was heard making Kibum look around, finding Minho trying to hide his amusement. Kibum frowned, sticking out his tongue to him.

“Kibum, please behave” his mother scolded him.

The bus number 16 arrived at 7:45 and the old lady, the business man, Kibum and Minho with their mothers, got into it.

Minho’s eyes followed Kibum until the other boy sat at the bottom of the bus, next to the window.

Kibum soon got distracted by the scenery through the window. It was a little different from the one he used to see on his father’s car.

“Umma, look!” he said excited. “There’s a huuuuge tree over there”

“Yes, sweetheart, it’s beautiful”

Minho smiled at Kibum’s excitement.

“What’s its name, umma?”

“Its name?” the lady asked confused. Kibum looked at her, exasperated.

“The tree’s name”

“Oh… I don’t know, Kibum” Kibum frowned and looked away.

“Three-flowered maple”

Kibum glanced at Minho, who looked at him nervous.

“What?”

“The tree’s name” Minho said slowly. “It’s a three-flowered maple”

Kibum blinked, surprised, and turned to see through the window. Then, pointing to another tree, he asked:

“And that one?”

Minho stared shyly to his mother. The woman smiled and nodded, encouraging the boy.

“It’s a Manchurian maple”

Women looked at their childrens smiling as Kibum kept pointing to the trees and Minho kept saying their names.

It should have been a calm trip; it was supposed to be a calm trip.

Suddenly Kibum heard the bus’ breaks squeak and he found himself being pushed back. The windows from the right side of the bus crashed and the wall got closer to Kibum.

Before he could ask what was going on, a sharp pain crossed his left cheek and his neck. Scared he turned to look at his mother but the woman attracted him to her chest and held him tight.

And as soon as it had started, everything stopped. No one talked, no one moved and the beautiful landscape that Kibum had been admiring was nowhere to be seen.

Kibum’s sight became black for moment and he felt like throwing up. His mother’s arms still were around him but he could feel that something wasn’t right.

“Umma?” Kibum asked with weak voice. The woman didn’t answer. Kibum stared at the beautiful brown hair of his mother just to find a ticky red liquid coming out from her head.

“Umma! Please, wake up!” Kibum said as he shook her a little. He heard a little groan and his mother’s eyelids moved a little. “I’ll get help! Don’t worry!”

The bus rested on one side. Kibum saw an old lady on the front seat, laying unconscious.

“Help! Please!” the business man was yelling. “My leg!”

Kibum walked through the broken glass to where he remembered was the door, when he heard a noise.

Minho was laying on what was now the ground, his face was hidden between his knees. He had some cuts on his arms and face but otherwise he seemed to be unharmed, but his mother hasn’t had the same luck. The woman’s arm was twisted in a weird angle and her face was all covered in blood.

As Kibum got closer, he could hear Minho sobbing quietly.

“Are you okay?!” Kibum’s voice trembled a little. Minho didn’t look at him.

“She isn’t moving” he mumbled. “She isn’t moving”

Kibum looked at him, not knowing what to do. Suddenly he found himself hugging a devastated Minho.

“Everything is going to be alright” he whispered, trying to comfort the boy.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The driver of a pantechnicon had lost the control of the vehicle and had finished colliding with the right side of the bus number 16. After a few weeks the police would determine that there had been a mechanical failure on the breaks of the truck and clasified the incident as an accident.

The paramedics had declared Minho’s mother dead on the scene. Minho couldn’t tear his eyes off of the corpse as she was driven away from the scene on a stretcher. Kibum’s mother had been alive by the time the rescuers could take her out of the bus, yet she didn’t survive once they arrived to the hospital.

They were almost unharmed. Minho’s cuts were superficial but he had a contusion on the head. Kibum had a huge open wound going through his cheek to his neck. Both of them were taken to the hospital too. Kibum couldn’t help but cry and scream when they told him about his mother but his eyes remained dry as they healed his wound.

The world had change totally for the two of them.

Minho had no one else but his grandmother so he had to move to her house. That had meant change into a new school, leaving his old friends behind. His grandma was a really sweet woman who tried her best to help Minho whenever he needed it, yet he couldn’t help but miss his mother.

Things for Kibum weren’t any better. He had his father, yet the man never was at home and Kibum spent all his free time in the kitchen with the cooker. Even though from time to time Kibum felt like crying, most of the time there was a huge smile on his face. And no one could understand it.

They didn’t see each other in most of a year.

The first anniversary of his mother’s death, Minho escaped from the school and walked to intersection of the collision. He waited until his grandma had turn the corner and then he started running.

Kibum was already there, a huge pink scar clearly visible on his cheek. For him, it had been quite difficult to escape from school. His teacher had left the room for a few minutes, enough for him to get out from the classroom. The difficult part had been to go through the huge gates that surrounded the school. Finally he had been able to do so after discover that loose bar on the back door.

“You…” Minho mumbled, making Kibum look at him. Kibum seemed shocked to found him there, yet his usual smile appeared on his face after a while.

“You escaped from school too?” he asked, approaching Minho. The boy nodded.

“You miss you mom too” was his answer. Kibum nodded. “Yet you are smiling…”

“My mom always liked my smile” Kibum said. “’I wish you never stop smiling.’ That was the last thing she said to me…”

Minho stared at Kibum, unable to comprehend completely. Sure Kibum had a pretty smile but Minho couldn’t even think on smiling the day his mother died.

The boys sat on the sidewalk, without talking. They stood there, just watching the cars go by and from time to time they stared at each other. They came back home past midday.

The next year Minho escaped from school again, like last year and Kibum was there. Minho could help but let his eyes travel through the other boy’s scar.

“I’ve been waiting for you” Kibum said. His hair was a little bit longer but his huge smile was the still the same.

“Grandma has been sick” was the first thing Minho said when they sat.

“And where is your father?” Kibum asked.

“Umma said he had a new family” Minho said. “I don’t remember him”

After that they didn’t talk anymore, but when the sun was setting Kibum stopped Minho from walking home.

“Come home with me” the boy said. “Appa isn’t home so I’ll be alone…”

Minho smiled a little, yet he shook his head.

“Grandma is sick” he said, and then walked away.

They met each other the next year.

Kibum smiled at the light curls that bumped Minho’s head. Kibum still had that beautiful smile on his face, his scar stretching as he smiled.

“How is your grandma?” Kibum asked as they sat on the sidewalk. Minho sighed.

“She has been fine” Minho said “but we spent my birthday on the hospital”

Kibum didn’t say anything. They stood there, as they had been doing it since the past years.

“My birthday is tomorrow” Kibum said absentmindedly. “Appa got angry last year because he found out I had escaped from school, so he didn’t gave me a birthday present.”

“Grandma was really scared when they told her that I was gone” Minho said. “I’ve tried to don’t give her problems, but I can’t stop thinking on my mother…”

“Neither do I”

Another moment in silence was broken with a woman screaming.

“Minho! Minho!”

Minho looked up and he saw his grandmother walking quickly towards him.

“Halmeoni!” Minho stood immediately. “You should be at home!”

A slap crossed Minho’s cheek.

“Stop it, you can’t bring her back!” the older woman yelled at him, her eyes getting teary at the memory of her dead daughter.

Kibum watched Minho being dragged away. He stood quickly and ran after him.

“I live on the street next to the bus stop” he said breathless. “Walk across the street and you will find a house with green bars. Come anytime”

Minho came to Kibum’s house a week later. Minho was utterly surprised at the huge size of the building as the butler leaded him to Kibum’s room.

“Hello” Minho mumbled. Kibum looked up from the book he had been reading and smiled at Minho.

“Hi,” he said, jumping off of the bed “I thought you wouldn’t come”

“My grandma was really upset” Minho explained. “Besides, I had to find you a present”

“What?” Kibum was surprised. Minho took a little package from his pants and gave it to Kibum.

It was a little wood box with a tie and a card on it, and when Kibum tried to read it he discovered it was in blank.

“I’ve realized that we know each other for three years and I don’t know your name yet.” Minho said awkwardly.

Kibum stared at him and chuckled.

“Kim Kibum”

“Choi Minho”

Kibum smiled and opened the box on his hands. Inside there was a small necklace of a heart with wings. It had engraved the inscription “An angel smile”

“I know it’s cheesy but I thought it will make you mom stay close to you.” Minho mumbled. Suddenly a pair of thin arms surrounded Minho’s neck.

“It will sound strange, Minho-ssi” Kibum said “but I’m really glad of having meet you.”

-------------------------------------------------

“Key, are you sure you want to do it?!”

“Yes, keep walking”

Minho sighed. He knew that if Kibum wanted to do something, he would end up dragging Minho with him.

“I have to see her” Kibum added. “It’s not fair you don’t visit your mother on mother’s day”

“But I…”

“The fact that she is dead doesn’t mean that she isn’t you mother anymore”

“You are mean, you know?” Minho frowned. “You use the same lame excuse whenever you want me to go with you to see your mother”

“This is not about me” Key said, walking a little faster. “If it wasn’t for me, you would never go to see her.”

“I don’t have to visit her every five seconds!” Minho rolled his eyes.

“Minho, it has been ten years” Kibum said looking right into his eyes. “You can’t avoid the fact that our mothers died”

Minho stared at his friend, trying hard not to punch him on the face.

Since the days when they went to the crash site and spent hours just sitting there, Kibum and Minho had become close friends. It was probably because no one else could understand their feelings about it, no matter how much they tried.

Kibum still had those sharp brown eyes but at seventeen he had experienced a little with his hair, which now was blonde and short. Even though the pink scar was still visible on his cheek and neck, Kibum seemed to be really popular among woman. A lot of them fall because that bright and beautiful smile of his, which (Minho thought) became more beautiful as time went by.

Minho was somewhat popular too, but he believed that it had to do more with the fact that he was the capitan of the soccer team rather than with his physical appearance. He didn’t talk a lot and when he did so, it was with short phrases. Kibum was the only one who could get more than 3 words from him, and it was mostly because he liked to annoy Minho.

“Hi! Guess who didn’t want to come this year either” Kibum said, staring at the flat grave on the ground. Minho rolled his eyes. “But now that he is here, Minho will go to visit his mother…”

“Key, I’ve told you that I…”

“I need to speak with my mother in private” Key started pushing Minho. “So you better go now before I ask her to haunt you in your dreams.”

Minho rolled his eyes, giving up and walking through the numerous lines of graves until he found his mother’s. The grave of wasn’t too far from the one of Kibum’s mother. The only reason why Minho didn’t like going to visit it was because he felt like he couldn’t do the same as Kibum and start talking to her. For Minho, he was just talking to a stone.

Minho sat in front of it, not even looking it. He barely could hear the voice of Kibum from his place, but it made him smile.

“Kibum talks to her like she still was here, but I can’t help but think that you are not listening to me” Minho mumbled. “I’m sorry… but it hurts to be here… It still hurts”

Some tears started rolling out from his eyes.

“Happy mother’s day” he said. “I miss you”

From his place in front his mother’s grave, Kibum watch the scene with teary eyes.

“Umma…” his voice cracked “He don’t even notice it”

-------------------------------------------------

The soccer practice took longer than Minho thought. He hoped that Kibum had not left yet.

“Minho” he heard someone scream from behind as a pair of thin arms hugged him.

“Hey, Key!” Minho said smiling. “Sorry, I thought it would…”

“I have a boyfriend!” Key said, practically bouncing with excitement.

“Sorry, what?” Minho asked, puzzled.

“I asked him and he said yes…”

“I didn’t know you were into boys.” Key rolled his eyes.

“That just shows how little you know me” he said pouting as he started walking to the exit. “I’ve told you a million times how cute the guy from the cafeteria is…”

“I thought you were kidding” Minho started walking behind him.

“Come on, Minho. You know I’d never play with this.”

I know

“Sorry” Minho said. “So… when I’m meeting him?”

“He is waiting for me. There!” Key said, pointing to the door. Minho could see a figure leaning against the door and suddenly Kibum disappeared from his side.

“Jonghyun!”

And as the blond hugged his new boyfriend, Minho felt his heart sink little by little.

-------------------------------------------------

12:30 AM

Minho wondered who could want to see him at 12:30 in the morning. He opened the door, ready to yell at whoever was outside, just to come face to face with Kibum.

“What are you doing here?” Minho asked, surprised.

“May I come in?” Kibum said, ignoring his question. Minho stepped aside and as Kibum sat on his couch, he went into the kitchen to get him something to drink.

“I know that we haven’t been in touch in more than a year” Kibum said when Minho came back into the room “but I really didn’t know where else to go.”

“What happened, Key?”

Kibum looked at his friend, suddenly frightened.

“He changed” Kibum whispered “I still can’t believe I didn’t see it coming…”

That was when Minho noticed the purple bruise on Kibum’s left cheek. Minho’s fingers travelled softly through it.

“I’m going to kill him” Minho said with threatening voice, ready to what he said, but the bright and beautiful smile on Kibum’s face made him think it twice.

“I know you will” Kibum chuckled “but I don’t want you to do it…”

“But he…

“I know this was wrong, but I endured it a year and I’ve had enough...” Kibum said. “I’m not coming back”

Minho nodded.

“Why you didn’t tell me?”

“I thought I loved him” Minho could see some tears on Kibum’s eyes. “I thought he loved me”

All Minho could do was hug Kibum as the older one started crying. They fall asleep on the couch.

The clock marked 1:30 AM.

-------------------------------------------------

“I really don’t think is a good idea” Kibum mumbled.

“Why not?” Minho frowned. “You need somewhere to stay and I have plenty of space. So just stay”

Kibum looked at Minho with a feeling he couldn’t quite describe.

“Thank you Minho”

Minho smiled and ruffled his hair, making Kibum’s smile appear again.

“Will go to see them tomorrow” Minho said.

“See them?”

“Our mothers, Kibum. We’ll go to see them.”

-------------------------------------------------

Minho held Kibum’s hand tightly as they approached to the grave of Minho’s mother.

“Hi. Now I’m the one who had to force Kibum to come” Minho said, looking to his friend.

Kibum chuckled.

“I’ll go to see umma” he said, letting go Minho’s hand.

“Tell her I say hi” Minho said.

Kibum placed a red rose on the top of the grave.

“I’ve make some wrong choices” he whispered. “I love him, now more than ever…”

Minho’s eyes remained glued on the blond’s figure.

“You would have love to meet Key”

-------------------------------------------------

Minho and Kibum where sitting on the sidewalk where they first met.

“Fifteen years” Minho mumbled.

“You should stop counting” Kibum said.

“Can you imagine what would have happened if the accident had not occurred?”

Kibum sighed.

“I would have kept asking you about the trees, you would have named them all” he said. “Umma and I would have reached the school stop and would have come down from the bus. Umma would had take me to school and then returned to home to start thinking about that night’s dinner. And we would have never seen each other again.”

Minho looked at Key, surprised that his friend had thought about it. Then he smiled.

“You know why I keep counting the years?” Minho asked. Kibum looked at him and shook his head. “Because if I it hadn’t happened, I would never fall in love with you”

Kibum stared at Minho openmouthed as Minho’s smile widened. Kibum’s eyes got teary and his cheeks grew red.

“Why you didn’t tell me before?” he whispered. Minho sighed.

“I don’t know… I know you love me too, why you didn’t tell me anything?”

“Everyone wanted you, all I could do was smile and let them try to reach you” Kibum cuddled next to Minho. Soon the strong arms of the younger boy surrounded him. “Because I’d never imagine this.”

Minho chuckled and kissed the pink scar on the cheek of Kibum.

“Your smile… I love it too” Minho said, making Kibum chuckle. “Let’s go home”

“I want to go to tell them” Kibum mumbled.

“You know that’s kind of creepy, right?” Minho said.

“I don’t care”

He noticed it, umma. Minho did know.

-------------------------------------------------

They kissed fiercely. Minho’s knee slit Kibum’s legs and made him moan when it touched his crotch. Minho tried awkwardly to unbutton the older boy’s shirt as Kibum rubbed his member over the pants.

Minho’s lips travelled through the neck of his lover and kept going down and down.

“Minho” Key moaned. “Do it, now”

“What’s the rush?” Minho asked, his lips brushing lightly Kibum’s belly.

It took him a minute to make the rest of their clothes disappear and then his lips kissed Kibum’s manhood, making the older male moan.

“You’re such a tease” Kibum groaned, making Minho chuckle.

“And you love me for that” Minho said, stealing a kiss from his lover.

Soon a pair of fingers got into Kibum’s entrance, making him grimace. After all that time together it was still a little painful for him. Minho kept kissing Key as he curled his fingers inside him, trying to make his lover more comfortable.

They had been apart from each other for a long time, work getting in the middle of their relationship for the past few months, and now that they had it none of them thought they could feel better.

Minho opened the condom pack with the teeth while Kibum’s hand played with his member. After placing the condom in his place, Minho covered it with some lubricant.

Kibum felt Minho getting into him and the sensation made him roll his eyes as he bit his lower lip.

“Move” was the only thing Kibum could say before becoming a moan mess.  He didn’t restrained himself and his beautiful voice had a really interesting result on Minho’s crotch.

Their movements were perfectly synchronized and the bed collided with the wall behind it as Minho increased his movements’ speed.

“There! Do it again!” Kibum moaned when Minho hit the spot that made him feel incoherent.

It was not long before they cum and Minho collapsed on Kibum.

“Minho, you are crushing me!” Kibum complained. Minho rolled his eyes and moved next to Kibum.

“I was expecting a ‘Happy birthday’ from you” he said.

“I’ve already gave you your birthday present, I can’t say it now” Kibum said teasing him. Minho frowned as his lover laughed.

Kibum cuddled next to him and pecked his lips.

“I want to see them for Christmas” he said, his eyelids starting to get heavy. Minho kissed his right cheek, the one that had that pink scar that he loved so much.

It had taken a while, but now Minho was able to think about his mother’s death without feeling grumpy. Minho also had been able to let go his grandmother when she died four years ago, and it was all thanks to Kibum, to his smile.

Minho didn’t know it but he had healed Kibum’s heart too. His mother’s death and his father’s negligence had been really tough for him. The time in which his ex-boyfriend used to hit him had cause that Kibum didn’t let anyone get close to him. Anyone but Minho. He had gave him the his confidence back.

They had been together for the past twenty years and both knew that their relationship had started the day their mothers died.

Now Minho never refused to visit his mother’s grave. He still thought that she would have loved to meet Kibum but now he understands that that was the way things were supposed to be.

Minho hugged Kibum’s naked body tight against his. Kibum’s eyes were closed but his lips curved in a beautiful, happy smile.

“We will go to see them whenever you want” Minho whispered, kissing Kibum’s forehead.

In a box that Kibum keep on the left drawer of the bedside table, is the necklace Minho gave to him when he was nine. He put it there when he first moved into Minho’s apartment, and Minho doesn’t know that Kibum still has it.

In a little black box that Minho saved last week on the right drawer of the bedside, is a beautiful diamond ring. Kibum doesn’t know, but Minho is planning to ask Kibum to marry him on the Christmas party their friends organized.

And none of them would want his life would have been otherwise, because if they lost something that terrible day they have it now.

They are together and it couldn’t have happened in another way.
