Question:
What is the percentage of water in un popped popcorn kernels?
Hypothesis:
I believe that finding the mass of the popcorn kernels before and after will allow you at determine the amount of water that was released thus knowing the percentage that was in it.
Materials:
250 mL beaker
Aluminum foil to cover top of beaker
Burner (hot plate)
Wire gauze
Scale
Cooking oil
20 kernels of popcorn A
20 kernels of popcorn B
Procedure:
1. Coat the bottom of the beaker with oil
2.Weigh the beaker
3. Add 20 kernels of popcorn B
4. Swirl the beaker so the seeds become coated in the oil
5. Record the weight of the beaker the oil and the un popped seeds
6. Cover the top of the beaker with the aluminum foil
7. Poke holes in top of aluminum foil with pencil
8. Place on the burner and move back and forth so that the popcorn does not burn
9. After all the popcorn kernels have popped place the beaker on the wire gauze
for five minutes
10. Turn off the hot plate.
11. Remove the tin foil and weigh the beaker and the popped kernels.
