So I walked over to the Au Bon Pain across the street to get a sandwich. I go to this particular location pretty frequently, so I'm familiar with the way they do things. Usually it's busy with students, but it's a pretty laid back atmosphere, you get your food, the people are friendly, etc. So today's experience was truly traumatizing.
First, when I walked to the door, a man in Au Bon Pain finery opened the door for me and said "Welcome to Au Bon Pain! It's a fine restaurant for fine people!" At first I thought they had just started employing a greater like Wal-Mart, but it was much much worse. When I went inside, there were Au Bon Pain people running around being cheerful, talking about how great Au Bon Pain is.
There were people taking pictures in the area you need to go through to get to the counter where you order food, so I was standing around looking kind of terrified and confused, waiting for them to finish, when a woman in Au Bon Pain finery and much too much eye make-up came up to me. "Hi, we're doing a special promotion for Au Bon Pain! We've come from all over the country to emphasize what a great restaurant Au Bon Pain is!" I should add that she put her arm around me, invading my personal space. "Oh," I said, "that would explain the disturbing cheerfulness." She then took her arm away and looked at me like I was quite strange then smiled and said "Haha! That's a good one!" I was then able to order my sandwich, but while I was waiting for it, I could here them spouting slogans all over the restaurant. When I got my sandwich, I slipped out the back door that connects to the school gym so I would not be further accosted.
Ironically, the whole incident is more likely to cause them to lose my business, not gain more of it. And I really don't understand why to would want to advertise to people already using your product. Oh well, hopefully I can put the whole thing behind me, cause I really like their croissants.
