Medici the Magnificent - ep 2.08 Mass - Reaction Post

.
These notes are from my first watch; there may be more detail in the tweets.

Lorenzo: “If you respect the sanctity of her marriage...”

OMFG LOL Giuliano “Ah, Madonna Ardinghelli...” I am crying with laughter. (I may be a little overwrought in anticipation of what’s to come...)

Jacopo looking rather fine there as he stands up.

All these people coming in late and moving through the congregation - great visual metaphor for the undercurrents going on.

Lucrezia Ardinghelli says Francesco Pazzi is in an odd place.

“...est in corpus meum” says the 17yo Cardinal as the first knives are drawn.

Whoever’s editing this is very good at the tension. It’s just natural, not Hollywood overblown.

Three dings and everyone kneels apart from Francesco, Jacopo and the conspirators.

Hmm, no attempt to be silent or discreet, just a fucking great steel-out-of-scabbard sound. And everyone’s running out except Jacopo. How does he expect to survive this, unless he’s totally confident they’ll all be on his side after the Medici are gone.

Oh God no, Giuliano.

Christ, have they done Vespucci as well? I thought he was on their side?

I think Clarice just said “You can’t fight men.” Ain’t that the fucking truth.

They hear Lucrezia shouting and screaming at Clarice to let her go and find Giuliano (I think that’s what it’s about) and they think that it’s about Lorenzo has just died.

Who’s the other guy in the ?sacristy? with Lorenzo and L and C?

We’re supposed to be seeing parallels here between Lucrezia & Clarice and Lorenzo and X.

Lorenzo to Giuliano: “Should have listened to you”. Took me 3 goes to get that.

Giuliano: “Better late than never.”

Wow, the look on Lorenzo’s face. This is the breaking of him as a decent man who thinks he can save the world and make it decent simply by being decent himself, I think.

Salviati just explicitly stated to the assembled crowd that murdering the Medici was down to Jacopo Pazzi. Hmm. With friends like that...

Jacopo’s giving it all that and not getting much of a response. Did he genuinely expect to be greeted as a saviour, I wonder?

Oh yeah? Salviati to the crowd: “Gonfaloniere Petrucci will hand over his xxx to Jacopo Pazzi.”

Petrucci to Salviati: “Do you think we have no guards? Lorenzo sent for the Cavalantes this morning”. *sounds of horses trotting”

Bastiani Soderini (how good am I getting at remembering all these damn names) steps up and shuts Jacopo out of the Priori.

“The people will rule”. Except The People aren’t doing that mindless ra ra yeah stuff that the crowd are supposed to do at such moments.

“When the Medici run things, my trade is good and my boy eats.”

“We control the Priori” says Francesco. Oh yeah, that’s why you can’t get in, is it?

What exactly does the bell mean at this point? Bastiani is up there tolling it, and I need to go back to what was said when he started running up the stairs. Looks like maybe it means “close the gates and prepare for battle”

This is kind of embarrassing for Jacopo. I still can’t work out whether he honestly expected the people to support him, but he’s standing there like a spare prick at a wedding right now. Locked out of the Priori.

Jacopo takes to his horse but they’re closing the gates.

This is going to split up Bianca (is that her name) and Guglielmo. “He warned you. And you did nothing.”

Yup, Lorenzo is destroyed as a decent man. “I want the entire Pazzi family hunted down and wiped out.”

“I want the Pazzi named expunged (good word when you’re in a passion of oration) from history.” Well, he managed that all right.

Hey, Salviati, shit just got real. How do you like them apples?

Why is Salviati in black? Wasn’t he in red before? [Apparently he was in a red cloak as part of his Cardinal's getup.]

Salviati to Francesco: “Your father made an orphan of me with a stroke of his quill.” What’s that about?

“You are a Medici. I am a Pazzi. We could never truly be friends.” That's got to hurt - Lorenzo totally thought they *were* friends.

Salviati and Francesco to hang for all to see, Montesecco to have a soldier’s death at the point of a sword.

Salviati: If you kill me, Carlo will die in Rome.
Lorenzo: Not while I have the Pope’s nephew to bargain with. Hah, they brought that one upon themselves.

Sean gets to flash the sword around again.

Wow, mega humiliation for Jacopo - dragged through the crowds on a rope binding his hands together. Just like Sharpe and Harper when they were captured by Gudin, but with more humiliation in some way I haven’t yet worked out.

[Possibly because Sharpe and Harper were unknown nobodies in Ferraghur, but Pazzi has been a pretty big someone in Florence.]

OMG that’s what I *call* a hanging. Put a rope round his neck and chuck him off a tall building. Salviati is already hanging and Jacopo is there in time to see Francesco go over the side.

Pazzi has taught Lorenzo the lesson that it’s foolish to be decent and honourable.

This is all about the symbolism, isn’t it. Lorenzo takes his seat on what is pretty much a throne, while Jacopo kneels before him. And Sean kneels before a star of the next generation.

“Why? Why do you keep on hating us?” That is such a big question. The only answer you normally get is “haters gonna hate” so I’m interested to know what Jacopo will answer.

Aand that’s not actually surprising. “It’s you who hates us” says Jacopo. In major controversies going on irl atm we see the same thing. “Because you’re just a bunch of jumped-up wool-peddlars.”

OH this is her secret. “Their hatred is built on our hatred.”

OK, at this point I’m just enjoying watching Sean Bean acting. I need to watch again to see Jacopo.

This looks genuine enough - Jacopo kisses the picture of his wife in the locket.

Jacopo tells Lorenzo "You’ve lost everything you ever stood for. You’ve lost your soul." I’m guessing he ain’t wrong.

Ridiculous how much this hurts, just because of who’s playing Jacopo. Partly, I think, because of the method of death, which comes with a whole bundle of stuff from watching John Marlott (unjustly) suffer the same fate.

And from the awful calm of the justice chamber we suddenly cut to rioting, looting.

OMG, Sandro’s painting of Simonetta and Giuliano is burning. I assumed that was a copy of a real surviving painting. Oh, of course, it belonged to Vespucci.

God Almighty it’s not over yet. Lorenzo is going to kill Guglielmo and Bianca says he’ll have to kill her and the baby too.

Clarice and Sandro beg Lorenzo to show mercy and stop the looting and horror but he’s not looking convinced.

Who is this bloke telling the Pope that Lorenzo has his nephew the Cardinal as hostage?

Ooh, clever, Sandro is incorporating Giuliano’s angry scribbles into a new picture of Simonetta. That’s very fitting.

Sandro: “After death comes life. Rebirth.” Lorenzo looks very thoughtful at that.
