Went to see Quantum Theater's After Mrs Rochester last night. It was...not their best work. It was enjoyable, but felt a little empty, which is an incredibly vague description, but that's all I've got. I mean, the conceit was to tell the story of Jean Rhys life (as she partially told it in Wide Sargasso Sea, which was partially based on Jane Eyre) through the different characters and memories that inhabit her mind, so there were two or three different time periods and levels of reality being acted out on stage at one time. And it was a story that had to do with madness and alcohol abuse and physical and emotional abuse, but it still felt a little lacking, emotionally. Plus, Karla Boos totally had "poetry voice", which drives me nuts.

Anyway, not the most glowing review, but student tickets are only $15, so if you have a chance to see it before Sunday, I recommend it. It's worth seeing if only to support local theater and Quantum is always, at least, very innovative with set design and location, this one included. It is being held in the old Braddock Carnegie library's Music Hall which is in an interesting state of mid-renovation, but still a gorgeous space that they used very effectively.

Next Thursday is Oedipus, to which I am also looking forward.

Enough of this theater crap, really.

I stayed home yesterday with a cold, and probably should have stayed home today, but my Protestant work ethic got in the way. (Don't ask me where I got a Protestant work ethic; my mom didn't join the Methodist church until I was in high school.)

I'm not feeling too bad right now, actually, so I'm hoping I might make it out to Karma for a little bit tonight. We'll see...

I am definitely not subjecting my tender nose and throat to the Upstage anytime this weekend, though. So, if anyone wants to come over for a game night on Saturday night, or something, let me know.

sick, art
