So when I was in high school I went through this period where I journaled in haikus. It was the summer between sophomore and junior years (summer 2005), when I played club water polo, took classes at the community college, and fell in love. It was for maybe a month and a half, but I wrote SO MANY HAIKUS.
I wrote this one (and most of the rest) about this girl:
'A shitload of hot
lesbians' is how I like
to think of you.
For some reason, I was reminded of that one tonight, and I found the notebook I kept that summer. 1) High school journals are fucking awesome, especially since mine are all abstract imagery and poetic expulsion of feelings. 2) Some of these haikus totally rule. This is probably my favorite:
The All-Ameri-
can Rejects will blast hardcore
from my minivan.
I think if I had to sum up myself in haiku form, that would be it. This was written when I was 16, about four months before I got my driver's license. I'm 21 now, have had my license for about 4 1/2 years, I still drive a minivan and I still think that's awesome.
Damn, reading back over these I was not in a great place at 16, but I was smart as a damn whip and I could write. 1) Have I changed tremendously since then? 2) What will I think of my now self in another five years?
