it's late. i go out to the corner store for something cold - a soda, maybe, a popsicle. a girl is sitting out on her stoop. at the end of the short street i see the elevated train rumble past, its well-lit windows winking at me. when it is gone, i notice the brownstones, the duplexes, the townhouses that make up my little block. i pass two women on their front patio, surrounded by their children, laughing. papers litter the sidewalk as i cross the street. besides the suv with the high rollaz: roll or be rolled decal,  it could be in any time, but it could only be one place. brooklyn.

as i walk back, trying to savor my treat before the heat beats me too it, i hear the women discussing childhood obesity as their own children run wild in the yard. a few houses down, a bush rattles unsettlingly. the girl is still on her stoop, only now she is using her laptop as she chats on her cell phone. maybe it couldn't be any time. i don't care. i just want brooklyn to like me!
