Here's a question I've been wanting to throw open to discussion for quite some time. What are your views on spirituality? Note that this is distinct from religion - my personal view is that organised religion is just an attempt to curtail human spirituality and keep it within controllable boundaries ( Read more... )

I consider it to be a sad reflection of our times that despite our increasing freedoms and liberties, we feel uncomfortable talking about religion and spirituality. Apart from the fundamentalists, of course. I don't think they have much going on in the "feeling" department ( ... )

Thanks for your thoughts :) I have to admit that I'm inclined to agree that we are hardwired to need some form of spirituality, some form of belief in things that are not just the things we can see and touch. Apart from belief in an afterlife, there are plenty of things that people aren't prepared to deny the existence of - such as spirits, magic, supernatural stuff - no matter how rational we like to think we are. It used to be that such things filled in the gaps in our knowledge about how the world works, but it seems that now that we know a lot about the laws of physics and so forth, there is still no direct evidence that these other things don't exist - it's just that there's no conclusive evidence that they do exist, either. There's still room for belief.
