1. Character's Name: Anna Lynn Dominguez
2. Age: 25
3. Background:
Anna’s world Anna herself was born in 2045 to her mother Anna One. She was a product of a baby boom; her father had been in the military and had been sent on expeditions to the surface. Such trips were dangerous, and every time the troops returned unscathed, there was an influx of children. Unfortunately, soon after Anna was born, her father was called back out on a mission to the surface, and was never heard from again. Anna grew up with her mother in a single bedroom apartment in New Detroit. She had a relatively normal childhood - she was sent to school, had chores, and loved animals.
When Anna turned twenty, she began showing signs of becoming a Misfit (high fevers, vomiting, nausea, uncontrollable shaking, and night terrors). Fearing for her mother’s life for harboring her, Anna fled the safety of her warm home. Alone in the streets of New Detroit, Anna survived off scraps and handouts. Alone and terrified in an alley, Anna shifted for the first time. Dizzy, confused, and in a body that wasn’t her own, she stayed hidden in the shadows, until she was finally discovered by a fellow Misfit who called himself a jack of all trades. She took to referring to him as Jack, and with him, she managed to harness her new ‘power’ and managed to control the ‘beast’ within.
Anna and Jack co-led the Resistance together for five years until one day Anna was captured. A close friend named Veronica had tricked Anna into being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Ambitious and power hungry, Veronica had played both sides for years, working to become close enough to Anna to gain her confidence and trust. Manipulating the young girl had been easy, and after managing to separate her from Jack during a raid, she had led Anna to a secluded alley where Anna was rendered unconscious by a blow to the head. The last thing she remembered seeing was money pressed into Veronica’s hand.
(Anna is pulled from the beginning of this Facility stint - but I did think it important to note the rest of her story here.)
She spent one full year at the mercy of the Facility, and when she was liberated by Jack and a myriad of Misfits, she had become someone different than the woman he had fallen in love with initially. Her views on life had become skewed and she was prone to bouts of anger and occasionally became extremely volatile and violent. Her temper had become easy to agitate and those she had previously considered close couldn’t understand the change in personality. Anna became obsessed with bringing down the Facility in a way that was entirely unhealthy. She wouldn’t talk about what was done to her there, and even after Jack’s gentle but insistent prodding Anna closed herself off and refused to speak of the matter. Unable to get through to her, Jack eventually stopped questioning though deep down he though maybe he understood her reasons.
Jack kept Anna by his side and she became once more invaluable to the cause, proving her worth over and over by throwing herself directly into the line of fire on more than one occasion. Jack was the only person Anna fully trusted despite the common ground she shared with the Misfits in their camp. Despite Anna’s captivity and mental instability, Jack proposed and they were married. Life seemed relatively peaceful for a short period of time and Anna seemed to calm down.
Two weeks later, the Facility came seeking revenge for the liberation of Anna, and Jack was shot in the chest as a result. He died in Anna’s arms.
The following two years Anna threw herself into the cause and fought until she was worn thin, doing her best to protect her fellow Misfits and giving herself over completely to her cause. Her mission to bring down the Facility became borderline obsessive and she took the reigns of the campaign with a grim determination that she told herself hardened her heart to any misdeeds that might happen along the way. In the course of those years, she and her renegade rebellion brought down seven Facility laboratories, two federal buildings, and one national Monument.
On April 20th, 2074 (the day before her 29th birthday) Anna was killed in a raid on a Facility laboratory in New Manhattan. The mission had been compromised - someone in the party had leaked their location and intention, and they had been intercepted in the tunnels beneath the lab. Unable to get past the machine gun fire and sheer mass of Facility members, Anna had shifted in front of them all and thrown herself into the melee, providing an effective distraction while managing to take out several key players. Her shift and sacrifice blindsided the Facility and gave the Misfits time to retaliate and take advantage of the element of surprise. The mission was a success and two hundred Misfits were freed, which was more than had ever been liberated before. The Revolution was in full swing, and Anna’s name became a beacon of hope to those that were still alive.
4. Personality:
Anna will fight to the death for the Resistance, and eventually, does just that.
Her experiences with the Facility and living in the sewers have toughened her as a person, and she now feels very little sympathy for those that have joined with those that purposefully oppress. Her views on life (especially her own) have become warped; her sense of right and wrong also appears to become substantially different, at least to the outside observer. Anna seems to have no problem blowing up a government building, if she feels that it will prove a point or further the Misfit cause.
However, that is not to say that she actually feels no guilt. Anna is often haunted by what she does, and she tends to have dark circles under her eyes from an inability to sleep more than two or three hours at a time.
In an attempt to numb herself to loss, Anna will retreat, seeking solace in privacy. Preferring cooler, dark areas, Anna does this in order to distance herself, to try and keep those around her from becoming too close. She will also do this to try and sort out her thoughts, arrange them into different categories in an effort to keep herself from dwelling on the difficulties and hardships she has experienced, and is still experiencing.
Anna has had many friends and those she has cared about die in raids and bombings. Trying desperately to block out this mental grief and in a heartfelt effort to prevent further hurts, Anna works hard on this mask and strives to present herself as a woman unaffected by fear or regret.
Anna makes every attempt to come off as emotionless - she strives to be strong for the other Misfits and to protect them at all costs. Deep down, Anna is an extremely passionate person and loves deeply, and feels pain like anyone else - no matter what she tells you, or says. She longs for the fight to be over, but she knows that as long as the Savior lives and the Facility exists, there will never be peace or acceptance for her or those like her. She is a suspicious person and while she will die for her fellow Misfits (if it serves a purpose in the greater scheme of things - she will not throw herself away needlessly), she is sometimes reluctant to trust them.
She dislikes crowds and is at times hard pressed when presented with a situation in which she has to address the large groups. When she does find herself in this situation, she forces it aside and speaks passionately and with a heartfelt devotion, especially in regards to her ideals.
During Anna's life in the Underground with Jack, her name became one that was associated with mayhem and chaos, especially by the citizens of the Underground that weren’t forced to live in the rat infested sewers so close to the core of the planet. Ordinary citizens that weren’t Misfits whispered her name, and she and Jack were the cause of many a headache to the government. Alongside him, she became a freedom fighter, and has been forced into more social situations.
She hates the sewers that she has been confined to and has been, on occasion, prone to bouts of anger and rage in which she will shift and destroy whatever is around her. Being caged is something that is absolutely intolerable to Anna, since she is a subject of the Facility’s experimentation. Anna’s captivity is something that marks her as a little unstable, and she is more liable to lash out and strike at those that offend or anger her, along with those that are in any kind of authoritative position. It is, in part, because of this time spent in a cage that Anna has repressed many of her emotions and has opted to engage in a strange and selective sort of numbness.
5. Previous Game Developments: N/A
6. Appearance: Small and petite, Anna stands around 5’2’’, and weighs in at around 105 lbs. Her hair is a dark black, and her skin a golden bronze that’s traditional of people from India and its surrounding areas. She’s unassuming, but it’s those eyes and the amber coloring that grab the most attention. There’s a hungry animal lurking in the darkness of her mind and sometimes there’s a flash of something that people can’t define. Her PB is Sonam Kapoor.
7. Abilities: Anna is a shape shifter, meaning she can take the shape of an animal which is, in this case, a Bengal tiger. This is an extremely physical process for Anna, and generally, it’s excruciatingly painful since all of the bones in her body break and rearrange themselves every time she shifts. Anna also has a crystal clear and powerful singing voice, and is in general very musically inclined, though this is not something that she has had much of a chance to expand on.
8. Languages: Anna’s language is a mixture of several - the continent of New America became even more of a giant melting pot. She speaks ‘New American’ (Nouveau Amerikana), which is a combination of English, Indian, Spanish, German and French (these being the most prominent languages at the time of the war, and the ones that most survived the ensuing chaos, population wise.) She can however, speak broken, straight English as a second language. The government regulated everything, including language. This became the official language of New America, regardless of what everyone spoke.
9. Items: She has very little except the clothes on her back, and a small gold locket around her neck that was given to her by her mother. She has no money, no wallet, and no identification. Anything that might identify her or flag her as a Misfit, she has destroyed.
10. Weapons: Anna is carrying a simple handgun.
11. Writing sample - Third Person Prose:
It was supposed to be a flawless plan. No one was supposed to get hurt, no one was supposed to get captured. Anna and Danica had sat down and designed it together - hours and hours of careful planning and plotting had gone into it.
No one was supposed to get caught.
She’d trusted Veronica - the woman had been impeccably smart and quick witted. She’d been determined and full of a driven need, and Anna had liked that about her. Unfortunately, she hadn’t recognized that need as an intense hunger for power and money. She’d been naive - stupid. People could easily be bought and sold; Anna had seen it time and again in the slums, a few credits slipped under the table and the indigents were putty in your hands.
She was going to pay for that naivety now.
With a grunt she was led down the sterile white corridors of the lab, held firmly by two armed Facility members. There was something in her arm that was keeping her from shifting - the beast that lurked in her mind now cowed in a corner, trembling just as she was.
The door to Mads’s office burst open and she was shoved in, needle and IV dangling.
It was sterile - pristine, white - cleaner then anything Anna had ever seen before. She felt dirty just standing there, as if her presence alone contaminated the space.
The look she was receiving from the man behind the desk indicated he felt that was exactly the case. The book he was holding was shut with a snap, and he regarded her calmly before resting his palms on the desk.
"Well. I had been informed we were receiving three new today, but I had no idea I would have the pleasure of meeting you." He gave her a lazy, heavy lidded smile that turned Anna's stomach.
""Va te faire voir." She spat, trying in vain to jerk against the hands that held her, the needle that kept her from shifting. She was as good as dead, in here. It made little difference to her if she died prematurely. She only wanted to get at this man, to rip him to pieces and tear him limb from limb.
"Tsk, miss Anna. Hardly becoming of a lady of your stature." He flicked an invisible speck off of his impeccably pristine suit. "I was going to ask you to have a seat, but since your manners are...hm. Shall we say lacking? You still stand." He stood and came around the front of his desk, reaching to pick up a lock of her hair, twisting it in his fingers. "Anna, Süße - you really should cooperate." He mused, then lifted a hand to shoo the guards. The retreated, shutting the door with a soft click behind them.
She was alone, with him.
"Do not call me that," she snarled, struggling to stay standing. The guards had been supporting her more than she initially realized. "What do you want, hm? What are you going to do?"
He wagged a finger at her, and she wanted nothing more than to reach out and break it. Seeing that in her expression, he withdrew his hand, resting them both behind his back.
"Telling you would be a bit counterproductive, I think." He smiled at her again, a pleasant one with twisted undertones, a hint of mocking in that porcelain veneer.
"But I will give you a hint, yes? That IV - it will not let you shift. But it has hmm...side effects." Leaning forward, he moved to whisper in her ear, lips brushing against her skin.
"But it still has some...side effects."
Her stomach roiled again, and she fought to stay standing. She wanted to ri[ that needle from her arm, tear it out and shift, let the beast out and tear him into pieces.
The look must have reflected on her face, because he laughed suddenly.
"Anna, Anna. You are thinking not nice things again." Leaning against his desk, he buffed his nails.
"But that's alright. By the end of the week, I think you will be reevaluating your position, yes? We are going to become...how do you say...very close."
