House; As much of a trickster and prankster John prides himself to be, he is neither sly nor scheming. His jokes are just that -- causes for laughter, and he seeks no real hindrance with them. He is not of the lying type, and he has strong attachement and unshakable loyalty toward his friends and family. John would be a good fit for the House of Freya. John is a firm believer in all kinds of love and friendship, and he goes around spreading the "friendship disease", as it is first introduced to the trolls. What John drives John through his adventure are, undoubtedly, his friends and the little family he has. He is touched by all sorts of love he sees in movies, and he draws so many people to him without even purposefully trying.
Power; Charm. John draws people naturally, so it would only be the extension of something he already possesses.
Personality; John is, most of all, an open book. He doesn't hide anything, not even his strangest quirks, and what you see is what you get. He's friendly and optimistic, rarely letting things bring him down. Even his own ability to do certain things doesn't defer him, as he pursues an interest in computer programming despite not being very good at it. He also enjoys video games and web comics, like most 13 year old boys, but happens to have a talent playing piano. When his father is kidnapped, instead of allowing this to get to him, he goes out to look for him, determined to save him and bring him home. Rather than worry and panic that strange creatures have taken his dad away, he reacts by going forth and getting things done. This ties in with his optimism, as John endlessly believes that things will be okay. He is far from the type to be crushed by the unknown future, and instead he turns to it with confidence that everything will work out. He tends to always speak in a friendly manner, though he loves to joke around and prank people, sometimes even showing a bit of a sarcastic streak. His sillier side is a little crazy, and he'll stop whatever he's doing, no matter how important it is, to reenact a scene of one of his favorite cheesy movies. Or he'll throw a gigantic fit at the sight of a box of Betty Crocker products. He also makes use of a clever disguise (or so he thinks of it), which happens to be glasses and a hat. John's silliness and eagerness to do well are part of what makes him so endearing. His strange little quirks manifest themselves at the most unexpected times, usually when things are tense. He always sounds friendly, though, and even when he uses sarcasm it's almost charming. He loves teasing and poking fun (
here and
here), but it's obvious that he never truly means any harm to anyone, and cares deeply for his friends, regardless of whether he's just met them or known them for years.
Despite being a 13 year old nerd with a fondness for Nicolas Cage and crappy over the top movies, John is the leader of his group of friends and supposedly one of the strongest players in the game. His strength is far from physical, but rather stems from being grounded. When one of his best friends calls him the leader of the group, he claims that he's not the leader but her friend. He doesn't see himself as anything more and never lets the title of Heir of Breath get to his head, nor the fact that he is the supposed leader of his game session. John also sees the good in others, no matter how they might have treated him. Having originally blocked the trolls, he ends up befriending them as he believes they aren't truly bad people. It takes him a while, but after their initial trolling he opens up to them and decides to take a different stand on the trolls -- one where he tries to befriend them rather than let them rile him up, as they originally intended to do. Depending on how you approach him, John will either be inviting and welcoming, or kind of indifferent. The trolls contacted him first spouting nonsense he didn't understand, and so they only came off as bothersome jerks trying to upset him. But if you reach out a hand to him he will grasp it with a smile and you'll have a friend for life. He knows people do have good in them, and it's not too hard for him to see that. He therefore even forgives the trolls who knowingly lead him to his death. Twice.
Unfortunately, this is also a weakness of his. Being so trusting and naive makes him incredibly gullible, so he takes the word and advice of his friends without really thinking about it. He decided to trust the trolls, which ended horribly for him, but he doesn't even stop and blame them for a second. He choses to believe they had good intentions, and only wanted to help out. This might not always be the case, however, so it's something of a dangerous trait in him. He's also a little slow on the uptake with certain things, which doesn't help his case whatsoever. It only makes him more easily prone to falling into a trap, or manipulated by someone. In fact, he's manipulated for a part of his journey, and mindlessly does what he's asked. He rarely refuses what someone requests him to do, unless he finds it completely unreasonable. Which might not necessarily be very logical, as he once adamantly refuses to get cookies baked by his grandmother, and throws an enormous fit not to do so, but when asked to squawk and shit on his desk he considers it for a brief instant. As long as the person giving him advice or telling him to do something is a friend, he'll listen to them blindly, firmly believing that they have his well being in mind.
John isn't an idiot, however. He quickly grasps one of the concepts of the game, which is to punch cards in order to insert them into a slot, and have a machine build the item that the punch code corresponds to. John quickly calculates how this functions and realizes that cards can be combined to create different items. He also understands how to extract codes from the cards, or extract part of items from a combination of cards. He is the most creative one of all in his item making, combining things that usually result in somewhat helpful or useable items, more so than his friends.
The three most important friends John has are people he's met online and talks to through a chat client: Jade, Dave, and Rose. They occasionally exchange mail, specifically for birthdays, but he's never met them in person before the game. John's relationship with each of them is different, but they all mean a lot to him. Without them he would not do half of the things he does, and would not have played Sburb at all. They all push him in different directions, and although he is technically their leader, they often nudge him in the right direction before he takes any initiative on his own. He relies on them and knows he can turn to them if he's confused about something, or needs a hand.
He gets along strangely well with his best friend, Dave Strider, who is a slightly egomaniacal boy who enjoys rapping whenever he gets a chance to show off. Their personalities seem more likely to clash, but they balance each other out, and John tends to be a bit more sarcastic and stupid around Dave. They tease each other about their hobbies, and John pretends to think that Dave isn't as cool as he thinks he is, but in the birthday note he wrote him he admits to thinking the opposite. Dave is, in fact, pretty cool in his eyes, and a really good friend. He still makes plenty fun of him, however, but it goes both ways.
Next there is Rose, who is the one to introduce John to the game. He values her immensely despite teasing her over how she analyzes their behaviour and speaks like a psychology book. She's smart and John knows that, and he also believes that beyond her stony attitude she cares deeply about them. He thinks that despite her grim hobbies she is a very creative person, and he's thankful that she was the one to first make him play the game. She knew how to work it and get him where he needed to be, which he completely trusted her to do. She might get snarky and uppity, and sometimes passive agressive, she is a dear friend of his and she knows it's all to hide the fact that she cares.
Jade is genetically his sister, and they get along fairly well. She is a badass that knows how to use shotguns perfectly even while blindfolded, and John only admires her for it. He knows she's lived alone most of her life and that it mustn't have been easy, so he plays along with her every time she gets quirky. They get
silly in their conversations, but Jade often reminds John of details he might have forgotten. For example, she once reminds him of the simple fact that in order to marry someone, you should be in love with them first, something which he seemed to have forgotten after being told that he would inevitably have to marry Rose. They're very similar in some aspects, and have a sweeter relationship than he does with the others. Without her, he wouldn't have met Dave and Rose, and she's been his friend for years so he's incredibly grateful for the friendships she's brought him.
The four of them form a group of friends with a tight bond that develops over the span of the game. From sharing musical tracks and remixing each other's pieces, they go to saving each other's lives without much regard for their own.
John also befriends other people as the game goes on, although it's not necessarily reciprocated. The trolls started making contact with the four of them before the game started, and John had simply blocked them and gotten a new username to chat in peace. As it turns out, he ends up becoming friends with these people, as they always help them out as the game gets more complicated. He knows that Karkat isn't as bad as he makes himself out to be, and that despite his swearing and insults he is only trying to help. John likes teasing Karkat, as his reactions are always fun, and seeing what new insult he comes up with is entertaining. His antics make him laugh, but he knows he can rely on Karkat if he needs information or a favor. Terezi is one of the trolls to lead him to his death, but he doesn't hold a grudge toward her. He thinks she's a little goofy, and humours her, but it doesn't go beyond that. Lastly, there is Vriska, who heavily involves herself in what John does, and basically leads him for a large part of the last act. She manipulates him, and gets him killed again, but John understands that she didn't want to freak him out or worry him by telling him he had to die to become stronger (literally, as he reached a new level of sorts after being stabbed). Even after she confesses to killing thousands of people, John accepts that as a cultural difference, and talks her through her guilt and remorse. He trusts her, and considers her to be a friend.
Basically, John is a nerd with weird, crazy quirks but a big heart, and it's hard not to get attached to him. He might curse once in a while, insult things and people here and there, but he never does it with true harm intended, and the times he's done something nice and selfless for his friends by far outweigh the times he makes fun of them. He is a true, loyal friend that would do anything for the people he loves, even if they draw shitty things or write really bad raps or write weird gay wizard fiction. He might act like a normal 13 boy, trying to find his place in the world with lame pranks and sarcastic jabs, but what matters is that he never lets anyone down. As this is who John is at the core: whoever you are, if you get into his heart, you're there to stay.
Samples;
Network Sample; well...this sure is weird! i wonder how this place got here. i kind of feel like i am dreaming. but i pinched myself and it just hurt, i didn't wake up or anything. so i guess this is all real. or maybe i should pinch myself again.
ow. nope. definitely not a dream!
either way, um, i guess this is neat. it says we have everything we need to be happy, right? on that letter. so everything should be fine, for now.
i wonder what this means about the scratch, though. i hope everyone is ok.
i guess i should introduce myself. i'm john! i just got here, and apparently the gods brought me here. how'd'you guys get here? i am kind of...a bit confused, so if you could fill me in that would be pretty sweet.
thanks!
Log Sample; The scratch was a scary thing, John had to admit. He knew it was a risk to take, that they had no idea what might happen...but he believed in his friends and in himself. It was better to try than give up, put their hands down and their feet up and wait for the end. He didn't want that kind of ending. He wanted swelling music and everyone gathered together with their eyes brimming with tears of relief. He wanted his friends next to him, hand in hand, standing in unity after finally, finally being done. He knew life wasn't like the movies, though. It would just be so perfect. It was already unlikely, considering how many of them had lost their lives. He didn't even know specifics, but it still made his heart clench to know people had died trying to save them all. He wished it didn't have to be this way. Each story has it's self sacrificing hero, but this was their life and a game they had no idea would lead to all this insanity.
Still, he wasn't sure he would refuse if he was asked to start over. He'd seen so much in such a short amount of time, seen his father lying in a pool of blood, seen his friend the same way. He'd kissed her, brought her back, fought an unbeatable, omnipotent dog. He'd died, more than once, he'd been hurt, he'd heard of his friends being hurt. That part he could skip out on, sure, gladly, happily...but the other part, the other side of what the game brought them made all the difference. They'd met the trolls, creatures from another universe so different from them yet so alike. They wanted to win. They wanted to get their team through this, alive and well. They'd made friends of them, and his own friends had become more than that. They'd become part of his life in a way he'd never imagined, in a way that doesn't fade with time.
He was scared, but it was exhilarating.
No matter what happened, he'd had great, great people in his life, and he would never forget them.
