Ted hooked one of the shoes with a finger, bringing it up to eye level. Several of the little silver studs on the thin leather straps were falling off, and the heel was coming separate from the sole. He gave Will a comical look, holding out the offending shoe to his husband. “Fifteen years,” he said, starting his all too familiar rant. “Fifteen years, we couldn’t get her to wear shoes.” He shook the shoe, watching one of the studs drop to the floor. “She’s punishing us. This is her revenge for us badgering her about them.”

Will looked up at the shoes, sighed, and looked back to the legal brief he had been reading. “If I ask how much those cost, is it going to give me a headache?” he asked.

“Might even make you cry,” Ted confirmed.

“Makes me cry,” Becca called from the kitchen, shutting the refrigerator door with her hip before strolling in to the living room, nibbling on a brownie. “Listening to you two moan about my shoes.” She retrieved the other one. The heel had cracked in half, and was threatening to fall off. “At least I had fun before they fell apart.”

“I should hope so,” Ted muttered darkly. Becca stood up on her tip toes, kissing her father’s cheek.

“Drama queen.”
