Becca perched on the edge of the bathtub, watching Bobby run a comb through his pale locks. She narrowed her eyes slightly, lips thinning as she studied her younger brother. “One of is,” she asked, “or one of them.”
Bobby’s hand stopped watching his sister in the mirror. “Girl from school,” he said, watching as she drummed her heels on the side of the tub. “You know her.”
“Your hair.”
Bobby turned. “What about it.”
Becca hopped down from her perch. “It’s blonde,” she said as if she felt Bobby had suddenly developed brain damage. “And long.”
“I know what I’m doing, Rebecca,” Bobby said. Anyone else would have snapped at the girl, but Bobby treated her with unflappable calm, even as his hair went from snowy white to the same black their father sported. The length slowly shortened until it was brushing his ears. “Happy?”
“No. When are you gonna stick with one long enough for me to bother learning their names?” She glared up at her brother. “It’s dangerous.”
“I’ll let you know when I find one I wanna keep around.” He reached over, combing his fingers through her pixie cut. “You’re hair’s less red than it was this morning.”
“Just a little tweak,” Becca said. “I thought I’d go for something a bit more like Grandma Rebecca. You’re changing the subject.”
“Yes, and it’s a good look for you.”
