In truth, Terry had been extremely reluctant to take Matt and his mom up to the Watchtower. If he’d had any other options, any at all, he’d have taken his family somewhere else, anywhere else. But he didn’t; home wasn’t going to be safe until after the Vandal Savage guy was done trying to kill everyone even remotely connected to Bruce Wayne. At least neither of them were asking too many questions about where Terry himself was, and why Batman had come to their rescue; after all, that was the kind of thing Batman did. And rich old men tended to have crazy enemies; it was just the way of the world, and if you dealt with rich old men, sometimes you became the target of their crazy enemies.
Mom seemed to be taking it pretty well, so far.
Bringing them to the Watchtower was Superman’s idea. “They’ll be safer here,” he’d said. “Out of Savage’s reach.”
Unfortunately, it also put Matt and Mary McGinnis within the reach of Big Barda, who had been “volunteered” to stay on the satellite in case Vandal Savage was actually stupid enough to try and get there. The only thing that had persuaded Terry to leave them there was the desire to get this whole mess done with so his family could go home.
Nearly a day of what felt like fruitless searching occasionally punctuated with moments of heart stopping terror whenever Savage was feeling frisky ended with Terry going back to the Watchtower to check and make sure Barda hadn’t decided to shove his mom and brother out an airlock.
What he found instead of an alien amazon in a seething rage left Terry standing in the entry way to the cafeteria in shock. Matt was sitting on the floor at Mary’s feet, a portable game station in his hands. Terry’d seen the thing a million times, and Matt had been especially prone to babbling about the latest pet collecting game. Usually, Matt could be seeing playing the game with one of his many friends who also had the system. Terry couldn’t count the times he’d seen Matt huddled on the couch with one of his friends, playing that stupid game.
Only today, instead of another little boy clutching another of those game systems and punching buttons, he found Big Barda sitting on the floor in front of Matt, explaining the best strategies’ for using plant based creatures even against creatures that plant was traditionally weak against.
“Batman, we found-”
Terry tore his eyes away from the bizarre scene in front of him, turning to face Aqua Girl. She looked past him at Barda and Matt, then back to Terry with a little grin. “Yeah, she’s good with kids. Who knew?”
