“What happens when it’s all over?” Pat asked softly. Celeste watched as her people watched Clan Akkaba. The followers of Apocalypse watched them back, and everyone avoided Megan and Nezhno. They’d had their first real victory since the siege of Westminster had begun, but it didn’t feel like a victory. Nobody trusted anyone, and everyone was waiting for the hammer to fall. They’d broken the siege, yes, but it was only a matter of time before the Emperor and Consort came to deal with them themselves. The plan, when that happened, was to try and get one or both of them and take them out.
“I don’t know,” she said. She hadn’t really planned that far ahead; getting from one day to the next had been taxing enough.
She caught Nezhno looking at them, the beading on his eye patch glittering ominously. She couldn’t read his mind -- both he and Megan had taken steps to keep anyone from doing so. She couldn’t read the minds of the heads of Clan Akkaba, though it was easy enough to read some of their faces exactly how they felt about those around them, even each other. “I don’t know,” she repeated, “but I think we might tear each other apart.”
She’d let the monsters in to her home to keep other monsters out. And she wasn’t sure if she’d done the right thing.
Chase made his way over to her, looking about furtively. “Celeste, I just intercepted a transmission,” he said urgently.
