Amadeus’ sister’s hair smelled faintly of ashes as he held her tightly. “I’m sorry, it’s my fault, I’m so sorry,” he whispered over and over.
“You are such a doofus,” Maddie muttered back, giving Amadeus a little shove. She followed that up by slapping him upside the head gently. “I mean it. You’re a moron.”
“Brat,” Amadeus said, ducking a second blow.
“It’s not your fault, dummy,” Maddie continued as she pulled away. “That thing with the worms, yeah, all your fault, but this? This is you being all guilty over things you can’t control.”
“Don’t go-” Amadeus said, almost desperately.
“I gotta, dorkface. The bus leaves soon.” She kissed his cheek. “Be safe. Love you.”
